Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia is known as a destination with "Deep Roots" where unique assets and rich legacies related to Furniture, Motorsports, Outdoor Recreation and Cultural Arts offer exceptional visitor experiences.
"Deep Roots" gives a respectful nod to Martinsville's past, bringing relevance to the present by celebrating contributions, and providing a gift to the future with re-purposed activities, facilities, and new economic development opportunities. Deep Roots demonstrates resilience, renewal, and revival.
The Furniture Heritage phase of this campaign recognizes the contributions made to our community by area furniture manufacturers and the thousands of skilled craftsmen employed by them. The Big Chair, America's largest wooden chair resides in Uptown Martinsville and represents the furniture heritage of our past as well as the artisans that continue to create beautiful and functional works of art today that can be seen at the Southern Virginia Artisan Center, Studio 107 and Piedmont Arts as well as other area galleries.
Martinsville-Henry County's rich tradition of furniture and crafts will be celebrated at a new festival titled The Big Chair Affair on April 30, 2011.
