Exciting demos, activity areas and performances will be offered all throughout the day at Smith River Fest, presented by Bassett Physical Therapy on August 12, 2017.

Festival attendees must wear a Smith River Fest wristband to participate in the free activities listed. Wristbands are free and may be obtained at the festival gate.

The Smith River ExperienceThe Smith River Experience

Presented by Martinsville Parks & Recreation

Bring the entire family out for a taste of paddling. During this activity, families can check out a canoe (along with paddles and PFDs) and enjoy a short paddle trip along the Smith River. This activity will be offered after the River Race when water flow is slower to enable paddlers of all skill levels and even first-timers to try.

(Experienced paddlers needed as volunteers, email for additional info.)


Times: 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 and 4:30

Location: Reserve your time slot at Booth #82 

Tip: You can save time by filling out your waiver in advance.  

Casting Pool Casting Pool

Presented by River Community Bank

Try your hand at casting a fly rod and bait casting at our 40-foot long casting pool. You can meet anglers from Smith River Trout UnlimitedCasting For Recovery and the PHCC Fishing Team and learn tips from all of them.

The casting pool doesn't have fish but it does have plenty of targets so that you can test your aiming skills.

Kids Cycle Station Kids Cycle Station Presented by Dogs N Que

Presented by Dogs N Que

In this activity area, children ages 12 and under can get some one-on-one instruction
from members of the Henry County Bike Club and bike patrol officers from 
the Martinsville Police Department Bike Unit.

More advanced young riders can challenge themselves to a mini biking course 
complete with obstacles and small ramps.

Youth bikes and helmets will be provided for use by the YMCA's Mobile Bike Barn.

Paddling RentalsSmith River Outfitters

Presented by Smith River Outfitters

This outfitter provides professional river guide services for paddling and fishing on the Smith River and surrounding streams and rivers. They also offer canoe, kayak, raft or tube rentals and shuttle service.  During Smith River Fest they will have gear available for sale as well as rentals to use on the river.

While there will not be any grandfather clocks given out on August 13, everyone's a winner when it comes to the variety of musical performances and demonstrations offered throughout the day.

Climbing Wall Climbing Wall presented by US Army Recruitment Center

Presented by US Army Recruiting Center of Martinsville

This year at Smith River Fest youth can test their skills on the 20 foot tall climbing wall. Strap on the harness, climb the wall and see if you can make the cut.

Be on the lookout for guest appearances by G.I. Johnny throughout the day as well.

Kids Zone  Kids Zone Presented by Casting Logos

In the Kids Zone at Smith River Fest you can enjoy all the fun of bounce houses
and the inflatable slide for free. 

You can also get up close to the cuddly creatures from Infinity Acres
Petting Ranch!

You'll see animals from around the world including alpacas, rabbits, sugar gliders,
tortoises, snakes and more. Educational animal encounters and pony rides will be
offered at this area free of charge throughout the day.

See a variety of boats on display from Anglers Choice Marine ranging from bass boats and pontoons to kayaks and fishing rafts.

Talk to area fishing experts about the right equipment to make your next fishing trip a success.

Mobile Bike Barn Mobile Bike Barn Presented by YMCA

Presented by the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA

Borrow a Bike & Bring it Back! That's the motto of The Bike Barn presented by the YMCA.

The bike barn is bringing their fleet of bikes to Smith River Fest. Simply show your
photo ID to check out a bike (helmet included) and enjoy a leisurely ride around the Smith River Fest grounds.

Toddler trailers and adult trikes are also available.

Chainsaw Carving DemoChainsaw Carving Demo by Woodchuck Woodcarvers

Presented by Woodchuck Woodcarvings 

Enjoy live entertainment by Dwayne Hodges from Woodchuck Woodcarvers of Boones Mill, Virginia.

Watch in amazement as Dwayne takes a raw log and transforms it into a beautiful work of art. Will his work be an eagle, a bear, a trout? Come watch and find out!

Fly Tying DemosFly Tying Demos

Tying flies for fishing is an art that uses a diverse array of mediums. Feathers, fur, felt, thread and beads are some of the common supplies that you'll see used but you might be surprised by some of the more creative materials used in making these functional works of art.

Watch as fishermen from Smith River Trout Unlimited practice their craft throughout the day.

Tube Rentals Tube Rentals

Presented by Smith River Outfitters

New for 2016! Tube rentals are available from Smith River Outfitters for $4 each. Pick up your tube and required PFD at the booth then walk the Paw Path upstream to the 58 bypass bridge. Hop in the water and relax as you enjoy a cool float down to the Smith River Sports Complex river access. All equipment will then be returned to the booth. A required waiver must be signed before participating in this activity. 

Cost: $4 per person

Time: Rentals will begin one hour following the start of the River Race (approximately 11 am). Rentals will be paused from 12-2 pm for the Duck Race. Rentals will continue until 5 pm.

Duck VillageDuck Village

Presented by Boys & Girls Club of the Blue Ridge

In addition to the excitement of the Blue Ridge Duck Race, there will be excitement all throughout the day at the Duck Village. Enjoy free children's activities including:  Duck Ring Toss, the Duck Pond, Duckhole (cornhole), the Rub a Dub Bubble Contest, Duck Art, Duckscotch (Hopscotch), Duck Freeze (Music Freeze) and more!
