John Matthews has painted all his life. He retired early, at the age of 60, so he could paint full time. He began entering shows and received the Best of Show Award at his first show. He now exhibits in two galleries: The Art Cellar in Banner Elk, North Carolina and Tyler White Gallery in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He enjoys painting landscapes that incorporate some type of structure in them. He continues to improve his technique by studying under nationally known artists. He has studied in six different states from Maine to Arizona. He utilizes acrylic paints and enjoys every minute he spends painting.
