Along the narrow grassy stretch of median between the four lanes of U.S. Route 220 within sight of the North Carolina border, travelers might get a quick glance of a historic marker. This marker commemorates a moment in Colonial History when this area was indeed on the frontier and it was a moment when the Virginia-North Carolina border was officially established. Prior to 1728, there was growing confusion along the border area of the frontier as to where someone might reside: the Colony of Virginia or North Carolina. Each colony appointed commissioners/surveyors who traveled and marked the boundary in 1728. William Byrd II was a Virginia Commissioner who later had his diary of the journey published - now regarded as a classic literary work.
