32 teams visit the Smith River Sports Complex on Saturday

The Smith River Sports Complex is excited to announce the return of youth lacrosse on Saturday, June 4, as 32 teams will visit Martinsville to participate in the Hammerhead Frenzy Youth Lacrosse Tournament.

"It is always a pleasure of ours to host this lacrosse tournament," said Billy Russo, SRSC Director of Operations. "John and the Hammerhead folks have been such an instrumental part in growing lacrosse in this area with us.  Having another event that our local River Sharks can participate in is a huge plus for the growth of lacrosse in our area."

All 32 teams, including Martinsville's own Southside River Sharks, will be guaranteed three games in the round-robin style tournament that begins at 9:30 a.m. with lacrosse action on all six fields plus the festival grounds down by the river at the SRSC. The top two teams from each of the six age brackets will then face-off in the championship match. The under-9 championship match will begin at 4:30 p.m., while the under-11 and under-15 championships are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. The under 13 and under-19 Atlantic championships will then follow at 7 p.m. with the final game of the tournament scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. as the under-19 Coastal division will determine its champion.

"SRSC has all the amenities to host a large number of teams and uniquely located between two populations of youth lacrosse that don't get a chance to get together all season long," said John Gilman, Hammerhead Frenzy Tournament Director. "It's a great place to have a celebration of the game."

The Hammerhead Youth Lacrosse program began in 2013 by partnering with the Smith River Sports Complex to host two quality youth lacrosse tournaments, one in each the Spring and Fall season. The program is now in its fourth year and has continued to host two tournaments each year at SRSC, with the 2016 Spring Frenzy marking its seventh tournament at the complex.

"The game is growing and we're glad that Martinsville has Southside Lacrosse here and we hope to see that league grow," Gilman said. "We're glad to them as a part of the PCLA in the Triad. The group loves to come up here and utilize the facility. We have nothing like this Greensboro."
