71 Soccer Teams Set to Visit Martinsville

The Smith River Sports Complex and Piedmont Youth Soccer League have teamed up to host the Piedmont Shootout Youth Soccer Tournament this weekend, November 21-22. 71 teams from Virginia and North Carolina will be traveling to Martinsville to participate in the event.

The tournament will help conclude a busy season at the Smith River Sports Complex that includes the NJCAA Division 1 Men's Soccer National Championship, which will be crowning a national champion on Saturday at 3 p.m.

"This tournament not only has a huge economic impact on our area but also provides our local players a chance to play in a quality tournament in their backyard," SRSC Director of Operations Billy Russo said.

The Piedmont Shootout is now in its seventh year and will have a record 71 teams playing in 2015, including 10 local PYSL teams. The other 61 teams will be visiting from all over the states of Virginia and North Carolina.

This event is brilliant for our area and teams," Enda Crehan, PYSL's director of coaching, said. "It gives our PYSL teams a chance to play on home turf against some different teams they may have never seen before. It also gives our teams a chance to have family and friends come out and watch them and of course this showcases our soccer talent and the SRSC facility."

The tournament will run all day on both Saturday and Sunday. Games begin at 7:30 a.m. both days with Saturday's final round of games beginning around 8 p.m. Sunday will have championship games beginning as late as 5 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
