Art Reception & Gallery Talk at PHCC

On Thursday February 23, Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) hosts Blacksburg artist Laura Skinner for a gallery talk and reception at 1 p.m. in the Walker Student Center Art Gallery. Skinner will discuss the work from her show, Company Over Land & Sea. Her work has been on display since January 16.

Skinners’ Company Over Land & Sea features a collection of oil paintings on canvas and wood that fuse the past and the present – retelling the artist’s memories with a twist. Each composition is a fusion of vintage photographs and memories of the artist’s travels. Together the paintings depict a variety of figures that all tell a distinctive narrative.

Skinner builds texture and depth into each composition by painting in layers. “Each layer builds texture and depth,” says Skinner. “Loose marks and shapes are refined layer by layer, to bring the final image into view. It is these simple marks that revive fading memories, and project the message of Company Over Land & Sea.”

The PHCC Art Gallery introduces students and the community to the work and technique of successful artists in the surrounding area. The gallery is free and open to the public on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Walker Fine Arts Building.
