Bonerama plays this Saturday

Bonerama, the 15-year-old touring band from New Orleans that features a trio of trombones, will make its Martinsville debut this Saturday night at the Rives Theatre. The concert, which will begin with an opening set from local band Dr. Z & the Riff Raff, is sponsored by Carillion Clinic. 

The band’s high-energy live performances cover genres including vintage funk and classic rock, with jazz-like improvisation throughout. The band has performed at festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Fest, High Sierra Music Festival, Jam Cruise and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, among many others. Bonerama has also made national TV appearances on CNN and HBO (Comic Relief; Treme).

“While the idea of a rock and funk band led by three trombones may sound odd at first, I’m here to tell you that Bonerama is absolutely an act you do not want to miss,” said Shane Pinkston, president of Arts at the Rives Theatre. “This band puts on a show that is a ton of fun. They’ll have the dance floor going with original songs as well as some awesome rock covers played like you’ve never heard them before.”

Dr. Z & the Riff Raff, led by Martinsville resident Dr. Will Zimmer, will perform beginning at 8:15 p.m. Bonerama will take the stage around 9 p.m. Tickets to the show cost $12 in advance from Woodall’s Music & Sound, the Daily Grind and online . Tickets will cost $15 each at the box office of the Rives on Saturday night. Season passes are not accepted, but members of the Artisan Café Society will get in free of charge.

Bonerama features band members Mark Mullins (trombone/lead vocals), Craig Klein (trombone/lead vocals); Greg Hicks (trombone/vocals), Bert Cotton (electric guitar), Matt Perrine (sousaphone/electric bass) and A.J. Hall (drums).

The band’s most recent album, Shake It Baby, features performances from special guests Dr. John, Mike Mills (R.E.M.) George Porter, Jr. (Meters), Dave Malone (Radiators) and Mike Dillon (Les Claypool).
