Busy Weekend Ahead for the Sports Complex

The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) and Without Limits Ultimate are proud to announce that the 2016 Virginia Fusion Ultimate Tournament will be this weekend, September 24-25 in Axton, Va. The Complex will then host the first-ever Showdown on the Stateline fitness competition Sunday, September 25.

"Every weekend we try and host as many events as we can possibly fit at the SRSC," SRSC Director of Operations Billy Russo said. "This weekend is no exception as we will have three different sports and visitors from all over the country as well as local residents, a true snap shot of what our mission is in one weekend."

The full weekend will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday as 20 women's college ultimate frisbee teams from six states plus D.C. will take over all six fields at SRSC. Ultimate athletes will be traveling from: D.C., Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

"The field site's location means that it is within driving distance for a number of teams coming from all over the East Coast and Midwest," Michelle Ng, the event organizer, said. "Teams have indicated that they really appreciate the quality of the fields at the Complex, and I know that the athletes feel welcome in Martinsville every time they visit."

According to the USA Ultimate website, ultimate "combines the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of ultimate is played by two teams with a flying disc on a field with end zones, similar to football."

Sunday games will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude with the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Admission to all games is free and the public is encouraged to come join the excitement of ultimate while rooting on their favorite college team.

Also beginning on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. will be the first-ever Showdown on the Stateline Fitness Competition. The competition will feature 90 participants across 14 different age divisions from teens to adults over 40 years old. Participants will compete in a variety of activities from running to flipping tires, box jumps, pull ups and heavy lifting. The showdown will combine 14 different body weight movements with plenty of cardio exercise.

The only outdoor event of its kind is being organized by a partnership between CrossFit Eden and CrossFit 276 with the help of over 60 volunteers.

"I actually thought of the event while participating in the Helgramite Hustle Mud Run during Smith River Fest," Beth Simms, event organizer, said. "I thought it would be a perfect venue with the turf and bleacher seating to host this one-of-a-kind outdoor event all in one place."

The Showdown on the Stateline will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 25. Admission is free to the public. Vendors selling CrossFit apparel and equipment will also be on site. For more information about Showdown on the Stateline visit ShowdownontheStateline.com

The busy weekend for SRSC will conclude on Sunday evening when 427 local youth compete in their weekly PYSL recreation game day. Games will be played from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
