Cardinal Cup Classic

The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) will host another lacrosse tournament organized by ONS this weekend, November 2nd & 3rd. The tournament is set to begin at 9 AM for Saturday and Sunday and admission is free for both days.

The Cardinal Cup Fall Classic will feature 24 teams of U-11, U-13, U-15 and U-18 age divisions coming from North Carolina and Virginia.

The Cardinal Cup is sponsored by the Old North State (ONS) Foundation- a North Carolina non-profit organization. The ONS Foundation provides support for the development and enhancement of playing, coaching, and officiating opportunities in the sport of lacrosse.

"We have had very positive feedback from our past tournaments and quite a few teams have attended more than one of our events. We already have teams reserving their spot for the summer 2014 Cardinal Cup tournament," said tournament director Kathy Goldsmith. "Coaches and parents love the location and the amenities of the Smith River Sports Complex. The fields are easily accessible and the grounds are perfect for socializing between games."

The game results will be on display at the Administrative table in the Sun Trust Pavilion where the coaches and spectators will be able to see the teams' standings.

"The coaches especially like the playoff format of the tournament since the top 4 teams in each age division advance to the playoff rounds and get to play an extra game and possibly two if they advance to the championship game. Creating a game and volunteer schedule for 2 days isn't an easy task but it is great to see everything come together when we are at the fields. Our ONS parent volunteers are such an important part of the success of our tournament," stated Goldsmith.

Also on Saturday, November 2nd the Smith River Sports Complex, in partnership with the YMCA of Martinsville-Henry County, will host a Lacrosse Interest Session. Anyone interested in playing, coaching, volunteering, or learning about the plans for a possible lacrosse program starting in the Spring of 2014 at the Smith River Sports Complex is invited. The meeting will take place in the Chick-fil-A picnic shelter at 10 a.m.
