The Patriot Players at Patrick Henry Community College are offering up their skills as waiters and waitresses to promote their latest show “Nunsense: The Musical. ”The cast of “Nunsense” will be taking orders, serving food and singing while in character on Thursday, Feb. 19 at Wild Magnolia, located behind Patrick Henry Mall at 730 E. Church St. in Martinsville. Patrons are welcome to drop in anytime between 6-9 p.m. Tips to singing servers will go toward the Patriot Players program.
Patriot Players Director Devin Pendleton said he got the idea for “Singing Dinner: A Nun-raiser” from Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Manhattan, N.Y., which is a diner that features singing waiters and variety shows. “Every time I visit New York, I always make it a point to go to Ellen’s Stardust Diner, and I always love it,” Pendleton said. “This event is a great way to showcase our local talent, and it’s a way to bring a New York experience to some who may not be able to travel and see it for themselves.”
The singing servers will do a few numbers from the show, and also sell tickets upcoming “Nunsense” performances on March 5-7 at 7 p.m. and on March 8 at 2 p.m. in Walker Theatre at PHCC.
“If this is well-received and lucrative for both parties, we will look to do similar fundraisers like this to promote our future shows,” Pendleton said. “We’re grateful to Wild Magnolia for generously allowing us to come and do this event. All you have to do is come and eat, and you’re supporting the performing arts in our community and our locally owned businesses.”
Wild Magnolia Manager Mike Ashley said he was happy to support PHCC and the Patriot Players.
“When Devin brought this to me, we thought it was an amazing idea,” Ashley said. “We’ve been bouncing ideas off each other for the past year, and this was a great one. This is an opportunity to support PHCC and to support our community.”
