Young Days in MHC

by Anna Osenkowsky, Oh Henry Intern

Are you and your friends stumped on how to spend your free time? No worries! There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy Martinsville-Henry County just waiting to be discovered. Whether you want to enjoy a Friday night football game at a local high school, spend the evening dining and shopping, play a few games of bowling, or get out and get active, our hometown will be sure to keep you entertained for hours.

With autumn here, football games are in full swing. Teens are often found under the Friday night lights supporting their school's football team in the student section. After cheering on your home team, it is an unspoken tradition to head out to a restaurant. Grab your Friday night Mexican fix at El Parral, El Ranchito, Los Nortenos, Mi Ranchito, or El Norteno with the rest of the football crowd.

However, if you do not love watching football, why not go bowling at Sportlanes or play a few pinball games at Uptown Pinball? Friday and Saturday nights from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., you can head over to Sportlanes to Rock-It Bowling where the lights will flash around you with music blaring. If you are not up for bowling, head to Uptown Pinball for only $12 which includes an all-day pass, a bag of chips, a drink, and as many games as you want to play. If you choose to go on a Sunday, you will only have a fee of $10. How could anybody pass up a low-cost evening full of fun?

If sports and arcade games are not really your style, we suggest spending an evening dining and shopping. Shopping local is the best way to go in a small town like ours, so check out Sparkle Me Pretty and Pieces Boutique in Uptown Martinsville if you are a shop-a-holic and are constantly adding to your closet. For all the dog lovers, head over to Fido’s Finds or Grooming Tails to get all the things you need for your furry friend. If you are a book worm, you have to check out Books & Crannies. Once you have done all the shopping you can, pack yourselves back in the car to grab some delicious dinner. Both you and your friends will love the retro-style Fenderz, fantastic barbeque at Checkered Pig or Dixie Pig, or the home-style cooking of Red & Mae’s.

In the event you run out of options, take advantage of the beautiful scenery and wildlife we have in Martinsville-Henry County. Play a few games of soccer at the Smith River Sports Complex, take a jog on the Dick & Willie or Fieldale Trails, or head to Fairy Stone State Park to take a quick hike through the woods. Wherever you choose to go, you will see the beauty of our hometown come to life right before your eyes.
