Get Outside Ride-Walk-Run

For the past five years, a group of avid bikers with the Henry County Bike Club have gotten together on New Year's Day to ride. In 2015, the club began inviting the public to the event in order to encourage everyone to start off the year outdoors and active. The "HCBC Get Outside Ride-Run-Walk" was inspired by a similar event in Greensboro that club members had previously attended and they wanted to host one for riders in Martinsville-Henry County.

The event doubled in attendance this year and also benefited local food pantries as each rider and walker contributed canned items.  According to club president Tommy Smith, “This is the perfect opportunity to not only make a difference in making a healthier lifestyle choice, but to help others in the community that may be less fortunate.” The event featured cycling and walking/jogging options for everyone from novice to advanced participants.

New for the event this year was the addition of Chain of Fools Bicycle Repair shop which opened last spring. The shop offered mechanical help and a place for participants to gather for fellowship before and after the event.

The club’s goal is to continue to grow awareness for the healthier lifestyles and helping others throughout 2016 while planning 2017's event on January 1st to be even bigger and better.

The Henry County Bike Club hosts a variety of rides each week throughout the year. Details on the rides can be found on the Martinsville-Henry County events calendar at www.VisitMartinsville.com.
