Inaugural Youth Lacrosse Jamboree

The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) is excited to announce it will be hosting its first Piedmont Community Lacrosse Association (PCLA) Jamboree this Saturday, March 5. The event will bring 40 teams across four age divisions to Martinsville from Piedmont Triad communities in North Carolina.

"This PCLA Jamboree is an inaugural event for the SRSC and is the first time most of these youth lacrosse teams from the Triad of North Carolina have played at the Complex," SRSC Director of Operations Billy Russo said. "With our local team the Southside River Sharks joining the PCLA we look forward to hosting many more of these teams and additional regional lacrosse competition in the future."

According to Kevin Bugg, director of PCLA, 800 players will take the field on Saturday as this season-opening event is only one of two events where all 40 boys teams are at the same venue.

"The Lacrosse community is a very tight knit group and this is like a big family reunion," Bugg said. "We are looking forward to a great day of lacrosse and community on Saturday."

Games will begin at 9 a.m. on all five main complex fields. The final set of games for the day are set to begin around 4 p.m. Martinsville's Southside River Sharks are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The inaugural event is also something SRSC and PCLA are hoping to add to the calendar again each year.

"Billy has been awesome to work with and our families will love the Smith River Sports Complex," Bugg said. "We hope to make this an annual event for the PCLA."

PCLA currently represents nine town/city/county/community based members. In 2015 those nine members fielded 48 teams consisting of 800 boys and 150 girls participating in weekly games and practices from February through May. It currently has over 120 coaches coaching PCLA member teams. The organization is entering its third season under the PCLA umbrella and continues to improve the experience for everyone involved.
