Meet Gerald Holman

Meet a Martinsville Insider, Gerald Holman.  As interim executive director of the Fayette Area Historical Initiative (FAHI), you can really tell he loves the history in this area. His passion for the African American culture in Martinsville is inspiring and he is so knowledgeable.  Gerald has been in charge of FAHI's African-American History museum for a little over three years and has really enjoyed the authentic artifacts brought in from those in the community, which you can see on display. Originally from Washington DC, Gerald has loved the change in pace Martinsville-Henry County has brought to his family and has really enjoyed living here.  Here are Gerald's tips for enjoying Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia.

Where do you take friends and family when they come to town?

"FAHI Museum is my first stop.  We then go to the Old Henry County Courthouse and finally to the Virginia Museum of Natural History."

What places do your kids like to visit and why?

"My grandkids like to go to Fairy Stone State Park.  They like the picnic area and the lake."

What is the most interesting tidbit about FAHI?

"The amount of African American history that is in our building is outstanding.  Dr. John Bing [who is very well known in the area for his contributions for Martinsville-Henry County] provided quite a lot of information."

What are your favorite Martinsville-Henry County festivals and why?

"The Juneteenth Festival and Oktoberfest are my two favorites.  They have a variety of things to interest all cultures."
