Meet John Matthews

Meet a Martinsville Insider, John Matthews.  A true artist, John has been painting since he was 8 years old. He is shown here with a rough sketch of his latest painting. The beautiful landscapes he creates are just magnificent and can be viewed at local galleries, such as Piedmont Arts, and even restaurants, such as Third Bay Cafe.  He has a studio in Uptown Martinsville where he spends hours each day painting.  Here are John's tips for enjoying Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia.

Where do you take friends and family when they come to town?

"We take them to three destinations.  The first two are Piedmont Arts and the Virginia Museum of Natural History, both amazing sources of interest and learning.  The third destination is our beautiful Philpott Lake which in our opinion compares favorably in beauty with many of the better known resort destinations." 

Where do you go to enjoy sports and recreation? 

"I go to the Chatmoss Country Club to play tennis at facilities that are as up to date and well-kept as any you will find anywhere." 

What's the best part of raising a family in Martinsville-Henry County?

"We are very close to Roanoke and Greensboro in the event you want to take day trips to those cities; it's convenient to come home to the simple life.  There are also so many trails to hike and enjoy nature any day of the week."
