Multiple Events at SRSC This Weekend

The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) will see several athletes this weekend due to multiple events.

The weekend will kick off with the Carlisle Classic Field Hockey Tournament on Friday. This is the fifth year for the field hockey tournament organized by Carlisle's Field Hockey Head Coach, Meade Seiy.

"I enjoy hosting other teams from other areas of state to showcase good hockey and the wonderful facility that Carlisle gets to call home, which is the Smith River Sports Complex," said Seiy when asked what she enjoys about organizing this tournament.

The tournament will kick off at 4 p.m. with Chatham Hall taking on Bishop-Sullivan and North Cross playing against Nansemond-Suffolk. Carlisle will play at 7 p.m. against STAB from Charlottesville.

The field hockey tournament will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. with Nansemond-Suffolk playing against Chatham Hall, STAB taking on North Cross and Carlisle playing Bishop-Sullivan. At 12 p.m. Chatham Hall will play against STAB, North Cross will take on Bishop-Sullivan and Carlisle will play Nansemond-Suffolk.

The second tournament going on this weekend at SRSC will be the Patriot Classic Cup - Women's College Soccer Tournament. This is the first tournament organized by the women's college soccer program from Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) held at the SRSC.

Head Coach Larry Wiley wanted to establish this tournament for three reasons. The first is to showcase women's collegiate soccer. The second reason is to use it as a recruiting tool and an opportunity for the PHCC Women's Soccer players' parents to have a chance to visit for the weekend and see their daughters play. His third reason is to showcase the facility.

"We have a great facility, and I believe that if I can establish an event that brings in multiple collegiate teams from other states on an annual basis then the benefits can only be positive," stated Wiley.

According to Wiley the PHCC Women's Soccer team has an overall record of 3 wins and 2 losses. The Patriot Classic Cup will match the Lady Patriots against two quality sides from Maryland, and with the inclusion of Spartansburg-Methodist College, this has turned into a NJCAA Region 10 versus Region 20 clash.

The Patriot Classic Cup will start on Saturday, September 20th at 4:30 p.m. with Spartanburg-Methodist from Spartanburg, S.C. taking on the Community College of Baltimore - Catonsville from Baltimore, M.D. PHCC will play against Frederick Community College from Frederick, M.D. at 4:30 p.m. as well.

The Tournament will continue on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Community College of Baltimore - Catonsville taking on PHCC and Frederick Community College taking on Spartanburg-Methodist.

The Southside Football League will begin their games at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday taking on teams from Charlottesville and the Tidewater area.

The Piedmont Youth Soccer League (PYSL) will have recreation play starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. PYSL's travel program will have games throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Their TOP Soccer Program will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Concessions will be open for all events. For more information about the Smith River Sports Complex and the schedule please visit www.SmithRiverSportsComplex.com or contact Amanda Gray at (276) 638-5200 for any questions or concerns.
