Park Naming Contest

In December 2010, the City of Martinsville received funds from the Harvest Foundation to enhance the parking lot at the corner of Franklin, Ford, and Depot Street to make it attractive, well lit, accessible and convenient for both automobiles and pedestrians to Uptown and NCI. This parking lot is the main connector linking Martinsville's historic district to the Uptown Spur Trail which connects to the Dick and Willie Passage Rail Trail, a part of the Smith River Trail System.

Consultants at Land Planning Design Associates (LPDA), author of the Uptown Revitalization Master Plan and with help from Phoenix CDC designed a new park-like space to invite people into Uptown, onto the
Uptown Spur Trail and to surrounding anchors.

The space is designed with much more pedestrian-friendly stairs, that semi-circle up to an overlook within sight of the new American Flag mural by Artist Scott LoBaido. People can sit and talk prior to an evening at Theatre Works, a lecture at MHC Heritage Center & Museum, or a class at New College Institute.

The City envisions a park-like setting to accommodate the tourist and recreation enthusiasts who will start at the Trail Head and travel down the newly opened Dick and Willie Passage Rail Trail. This new park space as well as the Uptown Spur Trail needs a new name to celebrate these changes, preferably one name. Can you help?
