Piedmont Arts Dedicates Gallery to Judy and John Matthews

Piedmont Arts will dedicate the museum’s Lynwood Artists Gallery to the memory of Judy and John Matthews in a special ceremony on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the museum.

“Judy and John were great friends of Piedmont Arts and Lynwood Artists,” said Executive Director Heidi Pinkston. “Their legacy of support for the museum and the arts in Martinsville-Henry County is long-lasting and we are honored to work with the Matthews family to dedicate the Lynwood Artists Gallery in their memory.”

Judy and John moved to Martinsville in 1964. They were involved with countless community organizations, including Piedmont Arts and Lynwood Artists, and were active in the local arts scene. For many years, Judy and John curated the gift shop at Piedmont Arts, which has been instrumental in bringing the talents of regional artists to Martinsville. Both Judy and John served on the Piedmont Arts Board of Directors. A talented artist in his own right, John also designed the sculpture that serves as the Piedmont Arts sign and welcomes visitors to the museum.

The dedication ceremony, sponsored by Piedmont Arts, Toy and Joe Cobbe, Judy Epperly, Becky and Larry Farrar, Marty Gardner, Barbara and Morgan Holland, Suzan and Bill Kirby, Robin and Baxter Robertson, Fair and Denny Robey and Yvonne and Gray Givens, will begin promptly at 5:30 pm. Guests are invited to enjoy a reception with light refreshments following the ceremony. Admission is free of charge. Please RSVP attendance to 276.632.3221 or online at PiedmontArts.org.

Life, Love, Art: Works from the Collection of Judy and John Matthews, featuring selections from the Matthews’ collection of contemporary art, as well as work by John Matthews, will be on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery and Box Mezzanine Gallery during the ceremony and will run through October 5, 2019. Exhibit admission is always free of charge.
