Quilts, Textile-based Sculptures on Display in “Needle & Thread”

This October, quilts and textile-based sculptures by Virginia artists Linda Fiedler and Page Turner will be on display at Piedmont Arts in the new exhibit, Needle & Thread.

Fiedler, an award-winning quilt maker from Meadows of Dan, Virginia, has won national and international awards for her quilts and quilted clothing, which have appeared in such prestigious shows as the Fairfield Fashion Show and Hobb’s Fashion Show in Paducah, Kentucky. Fiedler’s quilts also hang in private and corporate collections throughout the country. For the past 20 years, she has curated The Art of the Quilt, a biennial quilt exhibition at Piedmont Arts.

Turner is an assemblage artist who collects items of deep personal meaning and painstakingly creates delicate objects that honor the feminine. Her work is grounded in the Appalachian region of Virginia. She was born in Roanoke, deep in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and lives and works there today. Her powerful assemblages include found objects, such as fur, wood, shells, paper and bone, that firmly position her work culturally and geographically in this region.

“Linda’s quilts and Page’s sculptures are in true compliment to one another,” said Director of Marketing, Communication and Design Bernadette Moore. “Both artists celebrate the feminine through the use of traditional textiles and process, but expand on the strength and resilience of the female character by using innovative forms and themes.”

Tom Teasley: Sounds You Can See will be on display in the Media Room. In Teasley’s exhibit, sight and sound intersect as one. Embracing film as a source of inspiration and experimentation, Sounds You Can See merges visual magic with Teasley’s original music.

Studio Group of Rockingham County will be on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery. Organized in 1947, the Studio Group is the oldest group of its kind in North Carolina. The present membership includes over 22 artists who work in watercolor, oil, pastel, acrylic, graphite, collage, photography, clay, sculpture and stained glass.

Needle & Thread, Sounds You Can See and Studio Group of Rockingham County will be on display at the museum October 28 – December 30, 2017.

Piedmont Arts will host a Members-Only Reception in honor of these exhibits on Friday, October 27 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the museum.
