Winter Fun in MHC

Tuesday November 13, 2018

Just because winter is approaching doesn’t mean that the fun is slowing down in Martinsville-Henry County! Beat your winter woes while (re)discovering some of the hidden gems of our community. From exploring award-winning museums and experiencing live theatre to participating in themed footraces and sipping local concoctions at our wineries and brewery, you can find a variety of reasons to return to MHC all season long.

The colder weather of the winter months offers a wonderful opportunity to discover one (or all eight) of Martinsville-Henry County’s museums. You can uncover history and discover a new passion at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, Piedmont Arts, the MHC Heritage Center & Museum, FAHI African American Museum & Cultural Center, the Bassett Historical Center, the MHC Historical Museum, Rucker’s Communication Museum and at the Philpott Lake Heritage Exhibit. Dive into the history of our natural world at the Smithsonian-affiliated Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH). VMNH offers award-winning exhibits, ground-breaking scientific research and collections and transformational educational programs for all ages as well as special events such as Reptile Day on January 19th! You could also immerse yourself in the fantastic world of fine art at Piedmont Arts. Affiliated with the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, this exhibit space is an award-winning art museum that curates thought-provoking exhibitions by international, national and regional artists. They also bring a full schedule of arts events to take part in such as gallery receptions, painting classes for all ages, concerts and performances. These are just a couple of examples of the fabulous museums available to explore throughout Martinsville-Henry County.

Uptown Pinball, the area’s only arcade, is a family-friendly hotspot that is ideal to visit during the upcoming cold season. Home to 5 of the 10 top ranked pinball machines in the world (as ranked by pinside.com's top 100) and other favorites such as Skee Ball and Air Hockey, the arcade offers limitless fun. An all-day pass allows you to play however much you want, when you want. There’s also a VIP gaming lounge and laser tag. Uptown Pinball isn’t just for kids - adults love the games too!

You can also escape the hum drum winter blues by delving into captivating stories during live theatre performances. Martinsville-Henry County is home to two theatre companies presenting the talents of local and regional citizens: Theatre Works Community Players and the PHCC Patriot Players. Fulfill your desire for music, drama and suspense this winter with scheduled performances that include Scrooge Macbeth (November 23-25 and November 29 - December 1) and Don’t Drink the Water(February 21-23 and March 1-3) by TWCP and Annie presented by the Patriot Players (November 29 - December 2 and December 6-9).

Wine and craft beer connoisseurs should make plans to visit Hamlet Vineyards for a delicious wine tasting and lunch on Sundays or stop by Mountain Valley Brewing on weekend for a refreshing pint of seasonal craft beer to warm the soul and forget about the cold. Mountain Valley Brewing also hosts musical events most evenings (Thursday-Saturday) as well as other events such as paint parties, stargazing and more. There are also a wine and beer events held at local venues such as Wine Tasting Wednesdays and Beer Release Thursdays at Daily Grind Café in Martinsville Uptown.

For those looking for opportunities to stay active during the season, the Miles in Martinsville will offer multiple themed footraces to enjoy. The Light up the Night 5K on December 8th will benefit theGirls on the Run & STRIDE and is a family friendly event that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Dress in your best Christmas attire or your wackiest and tackiest sweater and head for the finish line. You can also participate in The Nail the Rail 9 Miler on February 9th, presented by VisitMartinsville, which will be held on the Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail. It’s a simple concept really. Start at the zero-mile marker of the Dick and Willie Passage and run all the way to the 4.5 marker at Mulberry Creek, then turn around and run back. The question is how fast can you Nail the Rail? If you’re not looking to run, but still want to be outdoors, you can still have a good time throughout the colder months in MHC through biking, hiking, paddling and more. Just remember to stay warm and safe!

For more information on planning a winter trip to Martinsville-Henry County, visit our website at www.VisitMartinsville.com, call toll free 888.722.3498, or simply come by and see us at our Visitor Center located at 191 Fayette Street Martinsville, VA 24112 Tuesday-Saturday 9am-5pm.

Governor McAuliffe Announces $2.2 Billion Growth for Tourism Industry Since 2014

Friday September 8, 2017
Governor McAuliffe Announces $2.2 Billion Growth for Tourism Industry Since 2014

RICHMOND – Governor McAuliffe today announced that Virginia’s tourism revenue has grown by $2.2 billion since taking office in 2014 with a compound annual growth rate of 3.3 percent.  Tourism is an instant revenue generator for the Commonwealth, representing almost $23.7 billion in revenue in 2016, a 10.2 percent increase from 2013 when the tourism industry generated approximately $21.5 billion in revenue.

“Virginia’s tourism industry is a critical component of the new Virginia economy, providing jobs for our citizens and funneling millions of dollars back into our communities,” said Governor McAuliffe. “We have traveled across the globe to promote Virginia as a premier travel destination, showcasing our beautiful scenery, rich history, and incredible culinary offerings, in addition to our outstanding oysters, wine, craft beer, cider, and distilled spirits. I am committed to the continued growth of this important industry, and to showing the world why Virginia is for Lovers.”

Today, visitor spending in Virginia supports 230,000 jobs with 16,000 of those added during Governor McAuliffe’s tenure, representing a 7.6 percent increase. Virginia’s tourism industry also provides $1.7 billion in state and local taxes, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.6 percent. Virginia welcomed more than 45 million visitors from across the United States last year, a record high for domestic travel to the Commonwealth.

“As the fifth largest private employer in Virginia, the travel industry is an important sector of the Virginia economy, contributing to the quality of life for our residents and making Virginia the best place to live, work, and raise a family," said Todd Haymore, Secretary of Commerce and Trade. "That's why the McAuliffe administration, working in close partnership with the private sector, the General Assembly, and others, has been dedicated to growing the tourism industry by encouraging more economic development and new product, which help Virginia compete to be the best place in the country to visit."

Since taking office in January 2014, Governor McAuliffe has encouraged and overseen important tourism product development projects across the Commonwealth, creating thousands of jobs and bringing millions of investment dollars into Virginia communities. The number of new tourism products and their impact on Virginia’s economy has grown exponentially under the leadership of Governor McAuliffe, as Virginia witnessed an influx of new hotels, breweries, wineries, cideries, distilleries, restaurants, sports complexes, artisan trails, agritourism businesses, outfitters, museums, and more.

Additionally, Governor McAuliffe has awarded more than $3.3 million in matching tourism grants across the Commonwealth, helping localities leverage limited marketing dollars and maximize their ability to compete in an overly saturated, overly competitive market. Due to Governor McAuliffe and his administration’s support of tourism development and marketing, every region in Virginia has reported economic growth annually during his tenure.

In 2016, domestic travelers spent nearly $65 million per day across the Commonwealth. Employees in Virginia’s travel industry earned $5.6 billion in payroll income, representing a 5.4 percent increase over 2015. The largest increase in travel expenditures was in the food and lodging sectors, with a $630 million increase compared to 2015. In recently released data, all regions across the Commonwealth saw tourism growth in 2016.

“Governor McAuliffe’s leadership has encouraged unparalleled growth for Virginia, helping to advance every sector of the tourism economy,” said Rita McClenny, President and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation. “The Governor’s passion and enthusiasm for our great Commonwealth is infectious, and he has been an outstanding ambassador by promoting the Virginia is for Lovers message across the globe. We are grateful for the Governor’s dedication, support, and leadership, as he has piloted us year after year towards record-breaking visitor spending, job creation, and economic growth.”

Governor McAuliffe has also demonstrated a commitment to Virginia’s growing agritourism industry. In April, he announced the economic impact of the agritourism sector in Virginia, a growing division of the tourism industry. The study, conducted by the Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business, showed that Virginia’s agritourism industry accounts for $2.2 billion in economic activity. The report also showed that the economic activity attributed to the Commonwealth’s 1,400 agritourism businesses supports 22,000 jobs, contributes $840 million in income, and injects $135 million in state and local taxes. The study was the first statewide benchmark report to measure the economic and fiscal impacts of Virginia’s agritourism industry.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) is the state agency responsible for marketing Virginia as a premier travel destination and promoting the 48-year old “Virginia is for Lovers” brand, the longest-running state tourism slogan in the country. VTC operates as a fully-integrated marketing unit charged with increasing brand awareness through owned, earned, and paid media opportunities, as well as social media strategies.

VTC receives its annual economic impact data from the U.S. Travel Association. The information is based on domestic visitor spending (travelers from within the United States) from per-person trips taken 50 miles or more away from home. To view detailed economic impact data by locality, please visit https://www.vatc.org/research/economicimpact/.

Piedmont Arts Family Day Celebrates Indian “Festival of Lights”

Piedmont Arts Family Day Celebrates Indian “Festival of Lights”

Families are invited to attend Piedmont Arts’ India Family Day on Saturday, November 12 from 10:30 am – 1 pm at the museum.

India Family Day is a free community event open to all ages that celebrates the Indian festival Diwali, also known as the festival of lights.

One of the major festivals of Hinduism, Diwali spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. Its celebration includes millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows and around temples and other buildings in the communities and countries where it is observed. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night between mid-October and mid-November.

“We are really excited to share the Diwali festival with our community,” said Education Coordinator Becki Williams Vasquez. "It’s the largest festival celebrated throughout India and a time when people share good wishes with each other. We want to share those good wishes in our community, as well.”

During India Family Day, kids can enjoy free Indian snacks, music and themed crafts, including:
• 3D Elephant Cutouts
• 3D Architecture Cutouts
• Rangoli Coloring Sheets (artwork to bring good luck)
• Create a Paper Diya (oil lamp)

India Family Day will also feature a kids’ fashion show of traditional Indian garments and dancing starting at 11:30 am, as well as door prizes for kids and adults.

To learn more about Diwali and Piedmont Arts’ free India Family Day, visit PiedmontArts.org.

What is Geocaching?

Thursday August 11, 2016

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game that uses GPS-enabled devices such as smartphones to discover hidden containers scattered across communities, the country and around the world. To play, you simply navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache, or container, that is hidden at that location. Geocaches come in different shapes and sizes and the difficulty of finding them varies. According to www.Geocaching.com, there are over 200 geocaches to be discovered in Martinsville-Henry County!

To begin discovering geocaches yourself, simply log on to www.Geocaching.com, register for your free account, choose the geocache that you want to find and begin your hunt! They also have a smartphone app that you can download to help you along the way. What you will find will vary, but be sure to sign the log book inside and log the find into your account. Explorers before you may have even left behind a trinket just for you and if you like, you can leave a little something behind for the next. After discovering and logging the geocache, be sure to hide it exactly the way you found it.

VisitMartinsville currently has two active geocaches and the newest one is named “FORE in Horsepasture!”

There are more than 1.4 million geocaches around the world and August 20, 2016 is International Geocaching Day; making it the perfect day to get outside, find new geocaches and even introduce the game of geocaching to someone new. Be sure to post your photos to Instagram with the hashtags #Geocaching16 and #VisitMartinsville.

Geocaching is fun for everyone and can be enjoyed year-round! Aren’t you curious if there’s one around you right now?

Piedmont Kite Festival

Wednesday March 18, 2015

Rain put a halt to the 6th annual Piedmont Kite Festival last Saturday, but the museum is hoping this Saturday's promising forecast comes to fruition and kites can fly high.

On Saturday, March 21, the museum and Henry County Parks and Recreation are hosting the Piedmont Kite Festival at Jack Dalton Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The free festival encourages residents to get outside and enjoy the spring weather.  The festival includes a kite building station, games, crafts, face painting, temporary tattoos, and live music by Kim and Jimbo Cary, who perform using all-natural instruments that children can play alongside them.  Of course, festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own kites, too.

“The Piedmont Kite Festival is a great way to kick-off spring,” said Sara Reichert, museum educator and coordinator of the festival.  “The weather is turning warmer, flowers are beginning to bloom, and the Kite Festival is a fun way for everyone to reconnect with the outdoors after a cold and snowy winter kept so many of us inside.”

The festival is a part of the museum’s Martinsville-Henry County Community Nature Network, which works with community partners to help residents reconnect with the outdoors.

“A significant aspect of our programming involves incorporating outdoor elements,” said Dr. Denny Casey, director of education and public programs at the museum.  “We believe it’s important to reconnect everyone with nature from educational, health, preservation, and stewardship perspectives.  Studies frequently show a disconnect with nature, especially in young children, and events like the Kite Festival are ways we hope to help counter that."

The 6th annual Piedmont Kite Festival is sponsored by American Global Logistics, helping keep attendance to the festival free of charge.

“We are thrilled once again to be able to offer the Kite Festival free of charge," said Ryan Barber, deputy director of the museum.  “Offering events for as little cost as possible to attendees is something we always strive for when planning our programming.  The generous support from our local and regional business community, like what American Global Logistics has provided, is exactly what we need to continue to offer high quality events for as little as possible.”

For more information about the Piedmont Kite Festival and other upcoming museum events, visitwww.vmnh.net.

PHCC & Reynolds Homestead to Partner on Programming

Monday December 22, 2014

Patrick Henry Community College will partner with Reynolds Homestead, a Commonwealth Campus Center of Virginia Tech, to expand offerings of non-credit courses in pottery and weaving at the site in Critz starting in January 2015.

Lisa Martin, senior program manager at Reynolds Homestead, said Patrick County already has a very strong market for these courses.

“We decided that some of the Artisan Center programs might be good ones to bring up to our area because we have a very strong artisan population,” she said. “Traveling all the way to Martinsville to take classes might be difficult for some students, especially if they live in the Meadows of Dan or Ararat area. It could easily be an hour-and-a-half commute one-way.”

The Artisan Center at PHCC will handle registration and processing for courses while Reynolds Homestead will deal directly with hiring instructors and setting the class schedule. PHCC also will provide equipment including looms and potters wheels.

“This is a nice partnership because each of us is providing things that the other can’t – we’re offering a space to bring more people into the program who can’t get to Martinsville, and PHCC is providing equipment that we don’t have so we can expand our offerings,” Martin said.

Dr. Angeline Godwin, PHCC president, said she’s excited at this new opportunity to bolster course offerings throughout the college’s service region.

“We’re pleased to expand our partnerships into Patrick County to allow us to offer career credit arts programming,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to reach more people and enable them to learn the skills necessary to become artisan entrepreneurs.”

The curriculum will stick to the same guidelines as the artisan certification at the Artisan Center, according to Kim Buck, coordinator of community development at PHCC.

“Students still will be able to receive a certificate of study in artisan entrepreneurship, and they can do so with a concentration in pottery or weaving,” Buck said. “From there, they can expand into other areas and work their way up to take more advanced courses.”

Although the partnership will begin with two programs, Martin said there is a possibility to expand in the future if there’s enough interest.

“We’ll start with courses we know people are interested in right away,” she said. “There’s some interest in woodworking, which may be a challenge because of the equipment involved. But we’re more than willing to expand if the need is there for artists who want to develop and hone their skills, and learn more about the business side involved in being an artisan entrepreneur.”

Martin added, “We’re part of Virginia’s Crooked Road music trail and the Artisan Trail Network, and we’re very committed to the economic development of our area artisans. This program is part of our mission to help our professional and recreational artists.”

Class dates and times will be announced in early January 2015. Students may register in person at The Artisan Center at 54 West Church Street in Martinsville, or over the phone by calling (276) 656-5461. A registration form can be emailed or mailed to potential students upon request.

Martinsville Speedway's Christmas Toy Drive Raises over $13,000

Wednesday December 17, 2014

The holiday season is a time for giving and Martinsville Speedway’s 18th annual Christmas Toy Drive showed that the NASCAR community is willing to do just that. The toy drive raised more than $13,000 and saw 200 toys donated for the Grace Network of Martinsville and Henry County.

A network of more than 100 area churches, the Grace Network will use the money to provide toys and clothes to underserved and underprivileged children in the area.

“Being able to donate more than $13,000 to the Grace Network is going to help bring smiles to a lot of kids’ faces on Christmas morning,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “Martinsville Speedway is proud of our community and our fans. While the speedway presents the check, it truly is a community donation.”

The Grace Network gets lists of names from the churches in the network and then is able to take the money raised and shop according to each child’s needs and wishes.

“Being able to bring joy to children in this season is a blessing,” said Simone Redd, a Grace Network board member and the one who heads up the shopping. “The generous donations and toys received allowed us to spread the spirit and true meaning of Christmas throughout the community.

“Christmas is a special time of the year and we, at Grace Network, appreciate the opportunity to participate in the toy drive with the Martinsville Speedway.”

This year’s toy drive reached a bigger audience than ever before, thanks to some ticket packages that were put up for auction. Race fans from all over the country bid on race experiences like getting a picture taken in Victory Lane with the STP 500 winner or the opportunity to ride in the Official Pace Car for the start of the race.

However, it wasn’t all about change. Like in years past, fans had the opportunity to drive their personal cars around the track, in exchange for a new toy or a $10 donation. Different from years past though, the laps were spread out over two weeks, instead of being limited to one day. This gave fans from as far away as New Jersey and South Dakota the opportunity to participate.

For more information on how to support the Grace Network of Martinsville and Henry County visit http://www.gracenetworkmhc.org/.

Racing returns to Martinsville Speedway for the 2015 season with the STP 500 race weekend, March 27-29. Tickets to the STP 500 Sprint Cup Series race, the Kroger 250 Camping World Truck Series Race and the Virginia Lottery Pole Day are on sale and can be purchased by calling 1.877.RACE.TIX or by visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com.

Ryan Newman's Chase Inspires Martinsville High Football Team

Thursday November 13, 2014

When Ryan Newman visited Martinsville High School as part of NASCAR’s Chase Across America tour, he found himself 16th in points and an underdog in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Ten weeks later, Newman now finds himself as one of four drivers in the Championship Round, with a chance to win the title Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The school’s football team is now using Newman as inspiration, as they too find themselves in an underdog role heading into the state playoffs.

“Where he is winless and was still able to get to the Championship Round is a big deal for us,” said Bulldogs center Harrison Toole. “We have one win. Nobody’s expecting us to go anywhere in this tournament, but yet, if we tried hard and play our best we still have a possibility of winning the championship.

Much like Newman, the Bulldogs enter the tournament as a 16th seed. Their first round game Friday night is against Giles County, the defending state champion and a team that has won 25 straight games.

“We’re taking him (Newman) and using it as an ‘anything can happen, anything’s possible,’” said Nigel Preston, the team’s nose guard. “It doesn’t matter about winning. What matters is effort and how well you play.”

Kicker Emily Martin, who beat Newman in the kicking portion of the Punt, Pass and Kick contest during his visit, said that Newman played a role in the team getting to the playoffs.

“The fact that he was the underdog and we are the underdog, we can compare ourselves to him,” she said. “We used him as inspiration to get to the playoffs, to play hard and to get the points that we needed to get there.”

While a football game only lasts four quarters, the players will take what they learned from Newman and apply it to life off the gridiron, as well.

“It goes along with life too,” Toole said. “Because if you try hard and give it your best you have a chance to go far and be the best you can, in life.”

Newman will return to Martinsville Speedway March 27-29, 2015 for the STP 500 weekend. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com.

Piedmont Shootout Soccer Tournament

Thursday November 13, 2014

The Piedmont Youth Soccer League (PYSL) in partnership with the Smith River Sports Complex will host the 6th annual Piedmont Shootout Youth Soccer Tournament this weekend November 15th & 16th.

This year's event is the largest shootout yet as well as the largest event the complex has ever hosted with 70 teams registered from NC & VA.  Teams are coming from as far as Northern Virginia, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Richmond.  Hotels in Martinsville- Henry County will be packed and restaurants, and other area businesses will feel the effect of a projected attendance of well over 2,500 visitors to the area.  Boys and Girls ages 8 - 18 will compete with their families watching on.

There of course is also a local draw with the shootout as there are 12 PYSL teams participating in variety of age groups.  This event is a fundraiser for the PYSL and is the culmination of the fall travel and academy seasons.  "This event has become an established tournament in Virginia bringing in several different teams each year from all over" says Enda Crehan, Director of Coaching for the PYSL.  "Our teams have gotten much better over the years, competing at a high level at other events and I expect them to compete on all levels at our home event.  The academy or PYA program has really helped develop our travel teams at a young age and it is really showing up on the field and in the results" says Crehan.

In addition to the 9 fall travel teams competing from the PYSL there will also be a Boys U10 and Girls U10 team made up of fall PYA participants.  "This event gives the academy teams a chance to compete at a high level with teams from outside the area and prepare them for the travel program" says Crehan.  There is also a U12 Recreation all-star team from the PYSL recreation program that will be competing.

The SRSC and PYSL have contracted the services of National Soccer Events (NSE) out of Knoxville, TN to run the shootout this year.  NSE has several years experience with organizing events all over the southeast and they will handle all onsite duties for the event.  "We are thrilled to have an efficient and productive tournament organizer this year with NSE.  With the growth of the PYSL programs over the years it is only fitting that the club's signature event also is growing",  Billy Russo, Director of Operations for the Smith River Sports Complex and PYSL Board Member.  "The shootout gives a chance for the PYSL travel teams and the program as a whole to showcase their talent, program, and their facility", says

For information on the Piedmont Shootout please contact Billy Russo at 276-638-5200 ext. 3 or visit www.nationalsoccerevents.com.

PHCC Professor Opens Exhibition at Taubman

Friday October 31, 2014

An art professor from Patrick Henry Community College is showing an exhibition representing three years of work in a new show at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke.

Gerry Bannan’s “Vanitas” is described as a collection of still life arrangements connected to the art tradition vanitas, which comes from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible from a passage that states: “Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.”

“The point behind this is the idea that the word vanity is referring to futility,” Bannan said. “When someone says, ‘all my efforts were in vain,’ it’s more about the futile than being egotistical. The purpose, spiritually, is to remember and be humble in the face of your own mortality. The vanity refers to the efforts and achievements that one makes in life, but one should always remember in the end that your earthly life is finite.”

Bannan used BIC brand crystal ballpoint pens to create nine pen and ink drawings on Mylar, a form of polyester material.

“A lot of people found that fascinating because these pens are such a common, every day, mundane writing tool,” he said. “But I have found them to be wonderfully versatile at art making in that they have a great range of tonal quality… People are familiar with them. When they look at my drawings and think about their experiences with BIC pens, I think it connects them to the work in a way that you don’t get connected to a bronze sculpture because it’s not something people do every day.”

Bannan’s drawings in the exhibit range in size from 12-by-16 inches to more than six feet long. The largest is 20 inches high by 72 inches long.

“People often ask how long they take to create, and they can take a very long time to make,” he said. “It takes months for some of the larger ones. Art making takes a lot of time, and sometimes people don’t realize the actual time that an artist needs to put into the creation of their work. People may think if a person is talented then the work just happens, but there’s always an element of actual time that needs to be put into developing the work.”

Bannan said his drawings also include a great deal of memento mori imagery, which is Latin for “remember death.” He said this is depicted by symbols including skulls, fading flowers, ribbons and scissors.

In addition to his drawings, he’s also displaying two still life tableaus from the setups he used in creating the artwork.

“Building up these collections of objects is part of the drawing process,” he said. “The curator visited my studio and said she would like to have one or two of them included in the exhibition. It’s really great because it makes me think of them differently as maybe artworks in themselves, whereas before, I always thought they were in service of the drawing.”

Bannan received his bachelor of fine arts in printmaking from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pa. and his master of fine arts from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. He’s participated in solo and group exhibitions in several states including Virginia, Georgia and Pennsylvania. Bannan also owns BanG Studios in downtown Roanoke, a fine arts gallery and studio he operates with his wife Betsy Bannan.

“Vanitas” will be on display until March 21, 2015. Bannan will give workshops and gallery talks in connection with the show, some of which are planned for early next year. Check www.taubmanmuseum.org for details.

Amy G. Moorefield, deputy director of exhibitions at Taubman, curated this exhibit. To find out more about Bannan’s work, visit www.gerrybannan.com.

Explore MARTinsville

Thursday October 30, 2014

School is back in session but you can still get away for a little weekend adventure. Load up the family for a fun day trip to Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia in search of public art. You’ll be amazed at the variety of exhibits on display throughout the community.

A drive through the historic Uptown District of Martinsville will take you past four significant outdoor murals. The “Circus Mural”, by John Stiles, is located at the corner of Franklin and Main Streets in Martinsville. It is a cheerful look back in time to 1920 when the circus came to town. The work depicts a parade of elephants wearing colorful banners as they plodded through the streets to herald the upcoming performance. You can even see an actual photo of this day in time by visiting the nearby Martinsville-Henry County Historical Museum on Church Street.

Old Glory”, located on Franklin Street in Martinsville at the Theatre Works Black Box is a 38’ by 18’ American Flag painted by world renowned artist Scott Lobaido. Just looking at the incredible detail of this mural you can almost see the flag rippling in the wind. The most remarkable thing about it is that the creation was completed in just one day! Lobaido, known for his speed painting techniques, created the patriotic work in honor of local veteran, Cpl. JB Kerns who lost three limbs while serving in Afghanistan.

The “Uptown Farmers’ Market Mural”, by Betty LaDuke, depicts the role of agriculture in society and showcases the people that help bring food to our tables. After the mural was mounted to the wall at the Market on Church Street in Martinsville, a group of high school students under the direction of local artist Celia Tucker created their own interpretations of LaDuke’s work. The student’s wooden painted cutouts of produce and farmers can be seen throughout the Market.

The newest mural in Uptown Martinsville is “June German Ball.” Located on Martinsville's historic Fayette Street, the mural depicts a fictional scene from one of Martinsville's famed June German Balls, which were popular within the African American community in the early part of the 20th century. These balls were held yearly, in the heat of June, and featured celebrated entertainers from the Jazz age like Jimmie Lunceford & His Dance Orchestra, who performed at the event in 1938. The mural was designed and painted by Abigail Kieselbach and Briana Amos, interns participating in the New College Institute's summer internship program; local artists Charles Hill, Iris Gillispie and Lex Hairston; Piedmont Arts intern, Ally Sneed; New College Institute's Coordinator of Experimental Learning, Katie Croft; and Piedmont Arts' Director of Marketing, Communications and Design, Bernadette Moore.

Just a short walk from Uptown, you can see a variety of sculptures. The brushed steel sculpture, “Kabuki Dancer” by Barry Tinsley can be seen on the grounds of Piedmont Arts on Starling Avenue. Artist Ed Dolinger created a variety of sculptures, inspired by nature, that are found along the Uptown Connection Trail and Silverbell Trail in Martinsville. They include large-scale leaves, Silverbell blooms and small bronze sculptures of native Virginia wildlife. Young children will especially love searching for Dolinger’s bronze animals that are “hidden” along the corridor of the Silverbell Trail. There are eight animals to be found, including a rabbit, frog, turtle and trout.

Just a short drive from Martinsville, in the Village of Fieldale, you’ll find an iconic structure now repurposed as a piece of trail art. The 1931 Fieldale Iron Bridge was a beloved part of the community as many tales revolved around events that occurred on, above and under the bridge. The iron truss bridge spanning the Smith River was slated to be destroyed in 2009 to make way for a more modern concrete bridge until the community rallied together to preserve a piece of it. Located in Fieldale along South River Road, the structure now bears the names of nearly one-hundred past and present residents that cared to see the bridge saved by contributing financially to the preservation effort.

For a more lighthearted category of art, drive around the community to see how many painted brontosaurus sculptures your family can find. Part of the exhibition “Dinosaurs on Parade” you can find the long-necked dinos in a variety of places throughout the community. See if you can locate the cowboy, the student, the mirror-ball dino and even the friendly fellow named “Bud Ice-cream-a-saurus.”

Two of the area’s indoor murals are available for viewing on weekdays. Inside the SunTrust Bank on Church Street, a 73-foot long mural by Richmond artist H. Warren Billings hangs just behind the teller’s counter. The mural, which took a year to complete, highlights Virginia and local history. It features eight detailed scenes from 1705-1832, including: The Capital in Williamsburg; Richmond; The Henry County Courthouse; The Colonel Joseph Martin House; The Major John Redd House; Stratford Hall; Redd House; and Lover's Leap in Patrick County.

One of the most historic works of art in the community is the 1939 fresco, “Manufacture of Furniture” by Walter Carnelli. The mural is located in the historic Bassett Post Office on Fairystone Park Highway in Bassett and it depicts scenes of furniture makers at work. This is one of a series of murals across Virginia that was commissioned by the WPA under the Treasury Department. The fresco technique involved painting onto wet lime plaster. As the plaster dried, the pigments were embedded and became part of the building’s walls.

From industry and architecture to history, nature and culture, the topics of area works of public art are very diverse. Have fun discovering each of these area treasures with your family and who knows - you might inspire a future generation of artists!

If you need help locating any of these public art sites, visit the Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center (191 Fayette Street, Martinsville) for maps and helpful information. While there, pick up a copy of the Family Fun Passport that will enable you to earn a free t-shirt, just for visiting some of these sites.

Patriot Players Present "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"

Tuesday October 21, 2014

The Patriot Players at Patrick Henry Community College are putting on a show this fall explores love and acceptance, and has cast members doing a little soul searching of their own.

On the surface, “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee: A Musical Comedy” is a comedic show that follows a group of pre-teens as they compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime, while also revealing funny and touching stories from their home lives. Director Devin Pendleton said he hopes audience members will walk away entertained but also enlightened about issues affecting youth.

“This show is a first for us in being able to showcase difference,” he said. “I think the show hints to the fact that we can all come together in a diverse way, which is what theatre is. We have the opportunity to forget all the issues that await us outside the theatre door and feel safe – even if it’s only for a few hours.”

Bryan Dunn, a theatre instructor at Magna Vista High School and playing the role of William Barfee, said his character takes nerdiness to a new level.

“He’s someone who has been bullied all his life and feels the only way he can control things is to bully everyone back,” he said. “But in the end, he actually allows people to be nice to him and he allows someone to change him.”

As part of the show, the community will have the chance to give a donation to Stand for the Silent, a group started in 2010 by a group of students at Oklahoma State University after hearing the story of Kirk and Laura Smalley’s son, Ty Smalley. He took his own life at 11 years old after being suspended from school for retaliating against a bully. The group’s mission is to address the issue of school bullying through education and understanding.

“Stand for the Silent speaks to secondary age school kids, which is where school was the worse for me,” Pendleton said. “It wasn’t until high school that I started to develop my way in figuring out who I wanted to be. With October being National Bullying Prevention Month, we're excited to bring awareness to this very important issue.”

Stand for the Silent reports that 60 percent of fourth through eighth graders say they are the victims of bullying. The organization asks that everyone take a pledge to respect each other and help victims of bullying. More information can be found at ww.standforthesilent.org.

“Stand for the Silent is very honored and proud to be supported by the PHCC Patriot Players and their show, ‘25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,’ Kirk Smalley said. “We are so appreciative of everyone for helping us to take a stand against bullying by raising awareness to it and youth suicide.”

"Spelling Bee" characters run the gambit of personality types seen in school age children, including the loner, overachiever and the dreamer. The role of Logainne S., played by Sarah Webb, is the definition of a “try-hard,” according to Webb.

“In many ways I connect with my character because I do try my hardest to do my best at everything,” she said. “I think about all the pressure I’m under as a student, trying not to crack under it and trying to please everyone. I can definitely relate.”

“Spelling Bee” also deals with characters trying to find their place in the world. Dunn said, “I think I work on finding myself every day. I look at my students and see different parts of what I was and how much I’ve grown, but I also have an understanding of how much more I have to learn.”

Brandi Collins-Burnette, a speller and part of the ensemble, said identifying with the underdog made her want to try out for “Spelling Bee.”

“I suffer from dysautonomia with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or known as POTS, so I know a little about relating to the underdog and dealing with challenges on a daily basis,” she said. “I wanted to do this show to bring a little awareness to that.”

She also added that going through middle and high school, there was a time where she didn’t know who she was as a person.

“I was the chubby kid and I had an eating disorder in high school, but being in theatre in high school and as an adult has really helped define who I am,” she said. “It’s a place of acceptance with open arms for all people. It really has given me a place to find myself.”

Jane Leizer, program director for Patriot Players, said “Spelling Bee” is a show that will make audience-goers laugh, cry, and make them think about issues that young people deal with on a daily basis.

“Let’s face it – growing up is hard,” she said. “Sometimes, kids need to talk and be recognized for the struggles they go through. Hopefully, this show will open up a dialogue among kids, parents and teachers.”

Leizer said with each Patriot Players show, there’s a new issue to tackle.

“‘Purlie’ talked about racism and love, and Shrek taught us that everyone is capable of love – even an ogre,” she said. “We have actors ranging in age from 13 to 62 in this show, and they learn a lot from each other. I’m 63 years old and I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. Theatre allows you to look at all the wonderful things you can imagine and see them come to life.”

The show is rated PG-13 for some adult humor and minimal adult language. Performances run Nov. 6-8 and Nov. 13-15 at 7 p.m. in Walker Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are $12 and available now at the PHCC Switchboard or by calling (276) 638-8777. They also will be available for purchase at the door. Exploring MARTinsville

Wednesday October 1, 2014

“Old Glory”, located on Franklin Street in Martinsville at the Theatre Works Black Box is a 38’ by 18’ American Flag painted by world renowned artist Scott Lobaido.

Tour-ific Southern Virginia Museums

Wednesday March 26, 2014

Does spring fever have your family itching to get out of the house? Cure that case of the winter blues by visiting a museum. Several options are available right here in Southern Virginia to inform, educate and entertain your restless crew for hours. Here are five suggested museums to check out the next time your kids cry, "We're bored!"

At the Virginia Museum of Natural History, located in Martinsville, guests can experience the natural diversity of Virginia through a variety of permanent and traveling exhibits. Current exhibits such as "Dinosaurs," "How Nature Works" and "Uncovering Virginia" provide lots of hands-on opportunities to explore the topics ranging from demonstrations and puzzles to multimedia experiences. The building is not just a museum but also a working research facility. I personally enjoy watching the staff scientists at work in their labs. An expansive wall of observation windows allows guests to peek in and see scientific discoveries being made. Scientists might be examining a 65 million year old triceratops skull or sifting through buckets of debris for shards of Native American pottery. You never know what you might see them working on. My preschooler loves spending time at the museum's Discovery Reef play area, an indoor ship, complete with a reading nook and climbing wall that offers kids a safe place to play. Moms enjoy this space too because of the comfy couches for lounging and free Wi-Fi. (vmnh.net)

Danville Science Center, located at the historic crossing of the Dan in Danville, is a fun place for families to explore. The museum offers a variety of traveling exhibits such as "From Here to There" and "Bloodsuckers" which are both on display through May. Young scientists, ages 3-7 can explore Spoutsville, a play area designed with activities just for them. Across from the main building, museum patrons can visit the 1899 Southern Railway Passenger Station for additional exhibits featuring both live and preserved animals. The architecture of this historic station is magnificent and my son, who is a fan of trains, enjoys getting to go inside the museum's red caboose on display behind the train station. (dsc.smv.org)

If your family enjoys art then be sure to visit Piedmont Arts, located in Martinsville. Four galleries at the facility each offer a different exhibit ranging from nationally renowned artists to local talent. Every two to three months the exhibits change, so there is always something new and exciting to see. I enjoy taking my son to play in Pallete the Discovery Dog's Art Room. This kid-friendly play space offers opportunities to make music, put on puppet shows, paint, make collages and more. If you stop by the information desk, you can pick up a scavenger hunt and search the galleries for clues left behind by Pallete. Free Wi-fi and an art library are also available. Admission is free. (piedmontarts.org)

If you've ever driven through the Uptown Historic District of Martinsville then chances are you've seen the stately structure of the Historic Henry County Courthouse. While no longer used for legal proceedings, this building dating back to 1824 is now home to the Martinsville-Henry County Heritage Center & Museum. In the restored courtroom on the second floor, you can sit in the jury box and at the judge's bench to hold a mock trial or explore historical exhibits on display in the witness rooms. Do keep an eye out for spirits that roam the building. According to the museum's Executive Director, Debbie Hall, "We do have a ghost here. Sometimes when I am here alone and the doors are all locked, I will hear footsteps coming up the stairway to the second floor and will get up to see who it is before I remember that I am alone, well, except for our ghost. Others have heard our ghost and have also witnessed doors being opened and items being moved, then returned to their original position and then moved again." Downstairs in the clerk's office and vaults, a variety of historical exhibits are on display and are changed throughout the year. One current exhibit, "On the Shoulders of Giants," details the founding furniture, textile and tobacco industries of the region. Admission is free. (mhchistoricalsociety.com)

Are you old enough to remember party lines? I'm not, so our recent visit to Rucker's Communication Museum in Martinsville was just as informative to me as it was my young son. Located on the mezzanine level of Rucker's Antiques Emporium and Auction House, this museum packs a great deal of information into a small space showing the evolution of telephone communication dating back to a replica prototype of Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone all the way up to modern day cell phones. Seeing telephone switchboards and learning how the operators managed them was fascinating. My son enjoyed seeing the many interesting tools that linemen use when working on telephone poles. For a healthy dose of nostalgia, it's well worth a visit. Be sure to also check out the Wild West Gambling Exhibit located on the first floor to see a replica 1900s game room and some interesting stories both tragic and humorous. Admission to both the museum and exhibit is free. (ruckersantiques.com)

Tips for Visiting Museums with Kids

Does the thought of taking a young child into a museum make you nervous? Did your last trip to a museum result in chasing the kids while hollering, "Wait! Don't you want to see this?" Get creative and plan ahead before your next outing. With the right kind of preparation, kids (and parents) can go into the experience with both enthusiasm and respect.

Here are a few suggestions to try:
• Set the scene and read themed books before you go. Books can provide a point of reference through story preparing children for what they might see and build excitement about the upcoming journey. Christy Deatherage, Museum Education Coordinator, suggests Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones by Byron Barton as a great read prior to visiting the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

• Time it right. Plan your visit for a time when the children are well-fed and rested to avoid grumpiness. If they become hungry or thirsty during your visit, take a break to address those basic needs.

• Plan ahead and know what's inside so your child can look for things. Some museums offer activities for kids on their websites or at their information desks. Piedmont Arts offers a fun scavenger hunt featuring Pallete the Discovery Dog. Families can explore the galleries while searching for clues left behind by Pallete. If none of these resources are available at the museum you visit, plan your own scavenger hunt. ("Find an animal with a tail in this exhibit.")

• Get maps for everyone at the information desk or give the kids sketch books to draw what they see - occupied hands are less tempted to wander onto works of art.

• The best way for children to enjoy a museum is to get them involved. Ask thought provoking questions; you might be surprised by some of their answers.
o If you were inside this painting, what would you hear? Smell? Feel?
o What would it be like if you lived when the dinosaurs were alive?
o What shapes do you see? What colors?
o What does this remind you of?
