Thousands Visit Martinsville Speedway for Celebration 2016
For the 18th consecutive year thousands of people came to Martinsville Speedway for Celebration 2016, Martinsville and Henry County’s annual Independence Day Celebration.
The 2016 edition featured music from The Gatlin Brothers, along with the free carnival rides and fireworks attendees have come to expect.
“It’s a lot of fun to see all the people get together from Martinsville and Henry County,” Buzz Custer, a Martinsville resident and Celebration 2016 attendee, said. “It’s free. It’s cool to see everybody interact with each other.”
Attendee Joseph Crist brought his family out to enjoy the rides and fireworks.
“I think it’s very awesome,” Crist said. “I don’t see other towns doing this.”
What Crist is referring to is that everything but concession items are free, thanks to the nearly 70 local businesses that came together to sponsor the event.
“It’s special,” Custer said. “My mom’s works involved. She works for Hooker (Furniture). My dad’s work’s involved. He works for Eastman. It’s great to see everybody in the city and county pull together to have a great event.”
Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell looks forward to the event every year.
“For so many business to come together, to see how much fun the kids are having; this is what it’s all about,” Campbell said. “What a better way to show what Independence Day stands for than to have everyone in the community come out and make this a special event.”
