Throw Back Thursday to Raise Funds for Patriot Players

The Patriot Players at Patrick Henry Community College will offer up their skills as waiters and waitresses again to promote their latest show “Music From the Movies: 80s & 90s Music Revue.”

The revue cast will take orders, serve food and sing hit songs of the 1980s and 1990s on Thursday, July 9 at Wild Magnolia Bar and Grill, located behind Patrick Henry Mall at 730 E. Church St. in Martinsville. Patrons are welcome to drop in anytime between 6-9 p.m. Tips to singing servers will go toward the Patriot Players program.

Patriot Players Director Devin Pendleton said he got the idea from Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Manhattan, N.Y., which is a diner that features singing waiters and variety shows.

“Every time I visit New York, I make it a point to go to Ellen’s Stardust Diner, and I always love it,” Pendleton said. “This event is a great way to showcase our local talent, and it’s a way to bring a New York experience to some who may not be able to travel and see it for themselves. Our ‘Nunraiser’ for the performance of Nunsense the Musical brought in $850 worth of donations in March 2015.”

The singing servers will do a few numbers from the show, and also sell tickets upcoming “Music From the Movies” performances on July 23-25 at 7 p.m. and July 26 at 2 p.m. in Walker Theatre at PHCC.

“We’re grateful to Wild Magnolia for generously allowing us to come and do this event. All you have to do is come and eat, and you’re supporting performing arts at Patrick Henry Community College, our talented diverse group of community members, and our locally owned businesses,” Pendleton said.

Wild Magnolia Manager Mike Ashley said he was happy to support PHCC and the Patriot Players, and is even encouraging his staff to dress in costume.

“Wild Magnolia is excited to be participating with the PHCC Patriot Players again,” Ashley said. “The Nunraiser we hosted earlier this year was a huge success. This is yet another opportunity to support PHCC and to support our community.”
