There will be a total of 16 Men and 16 Women's teams competing with 2 Men's and 1 Women's teams qualifying to represent the Atlantic Coast region at the National Championship tournament on May 23rd-26th in Mason, OH. Over 12,000 student athletes on more than 700 college teams from across North America entered the USA Ultimate College Championship Series in early April.

This Ultimate Championship will bring over 700 athletes and coaches to the Martinsville-Henry County area generating a great economic impact.

"On the Men's side, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill comes into the Regional Championships as the 2nd ranked team in the country, with a 24-3 record, behind the University of Colorado. The second seeded University of North Carolina - Wilmington comes in ranked 10th in the nation with a 20-8 record," said Dave Branick, the Atlantic Coast Open College Director. "The women's division will be a dog fight for the only spot to "Nationals" with University of Virginia (15th ranked, 15-6 record) and North Carolina - Chapel Hill (20th, 14-12) expected to be the top contenders."

Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent's end zone. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds.

"This is the 3rd straight year that the Atlantic Coast Division-I Regional Championships will be held at Smith River. We are very excited to be back in Axton, as the staff at Smith River Sports Complex are always very welcoming and supportive of our event. ," stated Branick. "The fields are top notch and, with a region that stretches from Delaware down to South Carolina, the central location helps keep travel time and costs down for the student athletes. The event is free to the public and we always enjoy seeing fans come out to watch - both Ultimate fans and those new to the sport."
