Martinsville-Henry County is hitting the airwaves! We’re thrilled to share that our destination is featured in the latest episode of the Virginia Outdoor Adventures Podcast, a show dedicated to highlighting the best outdoor experiences across the Commonwealth. If you’re looking for beginner-friendly outdoor recreation, this is one episode you won’t want to miss!
Host Jessica Bowser recently visited Martinsville-Henry County, and the VisitMartinsville team was excited to show her around! Jessica spent a few days exploring the area and immersed herself in all things MHC. From paddling the Smith River and hiking scenic trails to cruising along the Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail, she learned firsthand why MHC is a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels.
Her visit wasn’t just about the great outdoors—Jessica also got to experience the heart of our community. We treated her to some of our favorite local restaurants and cultural highlights, including Piedmont Arts, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and the Fayette Area Historical Initiative (FAHI). And to top it all off, she enjoyed a cozy stay in a local bed and breakfast, where she could unwind and relax after full days of adventure. Those adventures are covered in a follow-up segment of the podcast.
In this episode, Jessica chats with Brian Williams and Anna Wheeler of the Dan River Basin Association to dive deeper into MHC’s outdoor offerings—and how both visitors and locals can get outside and enjoy nature in new ways.
Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll hear:
-
Fishing and paddling on the Smith River, a beloved waterway that winds through our community.
-
Camping on your own island at Philpott Lake, one of the most unique and peaceful overnight experiences in the region.
-
Biking or walking along the scenic Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail, perfect for all ages and experience levels.
