Virginia Storm Semi Pro Football

The Virginia Storm semi-professional football players are gearing up for their third season of exciting games at the Smith River Sports Complex.

The first home game at the Smith River Sports Complex is March 10 vs. Carolina Rams at 1:00pm on Turf Field #4.

“We’re excited coming off of our big win of 18-14 against the Capital City Cowboys based in Raleigh North Carolina,” said Chris Weeks, head coach for the Virginia Storm.  “We are loaded with a ton of local talent with 19 rookies this year.”

This past weekend Jacksonville High School N.C. graduate, Kenny Perry caught for a touchdown, rushed for a touchdown and passed for 110 yards.

Magna Vista standout Anthony Gravely led the defense with 10 total tackles and 2 sacks.  The Storms defense had three interceptions with the game changing interception coming from rookie Ja’von Tarple, a Martinsville high school graduate, late in the fourth quarter.

The Virginia Storm recently switched leagues and joined the East Coast Football Association (ECFA) league for the 2012 season.  They were previously members of the Mason-Dixon Football League (MDFL) from 1993 through 2010 at which time the team moved into Martinsville, VA to play.  The Storm played in the Central Carolina Football League (CCFL) for the 2010 and 2011 season but decided they needed to move the team into a Spring League.

The Storm offers an opportunity for young men to continue playing football past their collegiate or scholastic careers. The Storm provides inexpensive family entertainment and is the premiere adult amateur football team in Central Virginia.  They partner with the Community Storehouse of Martinsville-Henry County and offer a dollar off admission for those spectators that bring a canned or non-perishable food item to the game.

The Virginia Storm Semi-Pro Football team originally started out as the Lynchburg Jaguars in 1993.  They have gone through several name changes and have been one of the most competitive teams in the MDFL since their inception. The Storm has compiled an overall record of 99-103-3 with 11 playoff appearance making the 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 Conference Championship games, the 1999 and 2008 MDFL Championship games and winning the Northwest Division Championship in 2001 and the Southern Conference Championship in 2008.

“We ask that you come out this season to see semi-pro football here in Martinsville as the excitement of former local high school talents thrives on the field,”   stated Billy Russo, Director of Operations at the Smith River Sports Complex.  “These games are exciting, entertaining, and family friendly, so come out and support your football team this season.”

Admission will be $6.00 for 12 and up, $3.00 for ages 5-11 and 4 and under will be free.  Bring a non-perishable food item and get $1.00 of admission.  Concessions will be open.  For more information and/or a full schedule please visit www.SouthernVirginiaSports.com or call at 276-638-5200.   For more information on Virginia Storm visit www.VaStormFootball.com.
