Visit FAHI African American Heritage Museum

FAHI School Tour 200x200The FAHI African American Heritage Museum is a community treasure located at 211 West Fayette Street in Martinsville in the former Imperial Savings & Loan building. FAHI's initiative is to preserve the history and legacy of the Fayette Street area and the historical significance that the community has in Martinsville-Henry County.  FAHI strives to collect, preserve and interpret African American experiences and community life in Martinsville-Henry County. Local exhibits showcase over 100 years of history on Fayette Street and also include information and photos of influential, local members of the African American Community. The Fayette Area district continues to represent the commercial and institutional center of the African American community in Martinsville as one of its oldest neighborhoods. The 42-acre district includes 116 historically contributing buildings with architecture reflective of a number of styles. The properties date between 1900 & 1957. The district was listed in both the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

History Through Tees at FAHI The museums newest exhibit, entitled, "History Through Tees" showcases the power of self-expression simply through our clothing. The tees on display include shirts from the Obama-Biden campaigns, Positive African American Women, MLK Jr. and more.

FAHI is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 4pm and other times by appointment.
