Winter Fun: Spencer Penn Centre

This is the second of a three part series designed to share a variety of fun and unique things for families to do during the colder months in Martinsville-Henry County.

In winter, many parents find themselves searching for fun activities for their little ones to enjoy. There are plenty of ways for families to stay warm, have fun and even learn a few things along the way.

A perfect example would be the historic Spencer-Penn Centre, located at 475 Spencer-Penn Road, in Spencer, VA. This renovated school house is now a community hot spot for special events such as the annual Spencer-Penn Bar-B-Que Cookoff, classes and workshops, concerts, children’s camps and more.

For parents, the Spencer-Penn Centre is open for children to come out, visit the library to read and study, enjoy crafts and to also learn the history of this fine community, the building itself and the importance of preserving the past. And did we mention the games, puzzles, puppet show stage, computer games and stuffed animals? That’s right! Not only can children enjoy checking out books and reading in the special reading loft, but they are also encouraged to let their imaginations run free through a variety of mediums, including dress up clothing, children’s kitchen sets and more.

Spencer-Penn offers many different summer camps each year including a summer reading camp as well.

There is always a variety of different classes and workshops taking place at the centre including special interest classes from Line Dancing and Basket Making to Yoga and Stress Reduction. They also host special events that include a monthly music night on the second Friday of every month.

The Spencer-Penn Centre is also a special events venue capable of hosting weddings, rehearsal dinners, reunions, performances, classes, lectures and meetings. The John Shackelford Courtyard, shown at the left, is a gorgeous outdoor wedding venue option.

For information on rentals, classes and special events, give the friendly staff at the Spencer-Penn Centre a call at 276-957-9797.
