SUMMARY:Artwork Entry: Expressions 2026
DESCRIPTION:Artists living within a 100-mile radius of Martinsville\, Virginia\, are invited to enter work in “Expressions 2026: America250” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.\, Saturday\, June 13\, at Piedmont Arts. All entries must be made during the designated time frame. No early or late entries will be accepted. \n“Expressions” is an open-entry exhibition presented annually by Piedmont Arts and Lynwood Artists. In honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, artists are asked to submit work focusing on the theme “America250.” \nThe exhibition will offer an innovative and meaningful artistic experience for both artists and the community by transforming the milestone of America’s 250th anniversary into a platform for contemporary creative expression. The exhibition invites artists to explore the concept of revolution in both historical and modern contexts — encouraging new interpretations of freedom\, identity\, progress\, and the evolving American experience. \nAll submitted works in compliance with the entry rules are accepted into the exhibition. Up to two pieces of art may be submitted per artist. Artwork submitted for entry must have been completed within the last two years. Work previously exhibited in “Expressions” is not eligible. Artists should review the entry form with the complete entry rules before submitting work. \nFor more information\, visit PiedmontArts.org.

SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon Lecture: "A Few Lines to Margaret: A Local Account of the First World War"
DESCRIPTION:Experience the emotional depth of America’s involvement in World War One through a series of 45 letters from a local soldier to his wife. These frontline love letters reveal the humor\, dedication\, tragedy\, and love of the Lost Generation while giving a fresh perspective on the conflict that\, 100 years later\, remains deeply personal. Come join Hunter Haskins\, a member of the MHC Historical Society\, as he brings the story of the Paschals back to life. \nHunter Haskins is the Assistant Director of the Salem Museum & Historical Society in Salem\, just west of Roanoke. He is a 2021 graduate of Roanoke College with a double major in History and Political Science and a concentration in Public/Applied History. He previously worked with Ferrum College’s Blue Ridge Institute as a blacksmith and was a Carlisle School histories and humanities teacher from 2021-2024. His passion for history\, and desire to work in that field\, was affirmed by his happy experiences volunteering and interning with the Bassett Historical Center between 2019 and 2022. He lives in Salem.

SUMMARY:June German Ball
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to dance and enjoy live music and dinner at the return of the June German Ball!  \nBorn in 1938 on Baldwin’s Block\, the heart of Martinsville’s Black business district\, the June German Ball was one of the most celebrated African-American gala events in the South. Founded by the Baldwin Brothers\, it drew hundreds of attendees from Burlington\, Raleigh\, Durham\, and cities across Virginia. \nThe historic event featured performers such as Otis Redding and Jimmie Lunceford & His Dance Orchestra\, one of the premier jazz big bands of the era. For nearly 30 years\, the Ball was the homecoming event of the year\, a celebration of community\, culture\, and Black excellence. \nFAHI is proud to bring it back — honoring the tradition\, the music\, and the people who made Baldwin’s Block a beacon.  \nGuests are encouraged to participate in the “Old Hollywood Glam” theme by incorporating timeless elements such as silk\, satin\, or sequins\, vintage accessories\, and classic tuxedos. Standard semi-formal wear is also acceptable.  \nGet your tickets today!
