SUMMARY:Mike Wiley: A Game Apart
DESCRIPTION:Mike Wiley will perform his one-person play “A Game Apart\,” Thursday\, March 26 at Piedmont Arts. A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in the galleries. \n“A Game Apart” provides a glimpse of Jackie Robinson’s life during a bygone era of separate and unequal locker rooms\, of whites-only hotels\, and of restaurants with only a back door for colored athletes to enter. Witness the hopeless humiliation of a star player who was showered with adulation on the field and became a second-hand citizen when he walked off the diamond. Meet Jackie’s compatriots fighting the same battles between the end zones\, inside the ring and around the track. A Game Apart is a powerful lesson of courage through dedication\, perseverance and leadership. \nTickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students in grades K-12.

SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon Lecture: "Laying the Past to Rest: A History of Funeral Traditions" by Jarred Marlowe. Admission is free.
DESCRIPTION:Jarred Marlowe takes us on a fascinating journey through how we care for the dead\, from ancient mummification and early American burial customs to the rise of embalming\, hearses\, cremation\, and the modern funeral home. Along the way he answers questions like the difference between a coffin and a casket\, why cemeteries and graveyards aren’t the same thing\, and how funeral traditions in Martinsville and Henry County evolved over the last century. \nMarlowe is a graduate of Virginia Military Institute\, a member of the Col. George Waller Chapter Sons of the American Revolution\, a consultant for the Blue & Gray Education Society\, and the chairman of the local Virginia 250 Anniversary Committee. He writes the “Community Chronicles” column for the Henry County Enterprise and\, with Andy Doss\, runs the YouTube video channel “Doss-Marlowe: History in Sight.”

SUMMARY:Historic Garden Week in Martinsville - Henry County
DESCRIPTION:For one week in spring\, visitors will tour inspired private landscapes\, public gardens and historic sites across Virginia\, enjoying our beautiful state at the peak of spring. In addition\, more than 1\,000 world-class floral arrangements created by Garden Club of Virginia members will enhance tour properties. This beloved statewide event will include unique tours organized and hosted by 48 member clubs located from the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley all the way to the beaches of Tidewater. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, April 22nd\, for Garden Tour in Martinsville – Henry County! Once home to the country’s wealthiest residents per capita\, Martinsville enjoyed prominence in the mid-1900s as a leader in fashion and luxury. The houses and gardens showcased on this year’s tour include representatives from the town’s glory days\, including the homes of former Globman proprietors. Globman’s was an iconic and famous department store that opened in 1915. A past president of the Garden Club of Virginia now owns one of the featured houses. At the tour headquarters\, the MHC Heritage Museum\, attendees will enjoy activities that include creating flower arrangements to take home. The museum is a Garden Club of Virginia restoration site and has recently undergone a 10\,000-square-foot addition featuring rare and valuable antiques.

SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon Lecture: “The Right Place\, The Right Time - The Story of Ridgeway Clocks\, division of Gravely Furniture Co.\, Inc.”
DESCRIPTION:There is no grander statement for the home\, nor more coveted prize at a NASCAR race\, than a Ridgeway Grandfather Clock. Will Gravely will talk about his family’s unique space in the furniture industry during his program at 3 p.m. Sunday\, May 17\, at the MHC Heritage Museum. \nThe history of Ridgeway Clocks started exactly 100 years ago when Mr. R.P. Gravely and other local businessmen subscribed to $100\,000 in stock to start a company to make furniture in the building in uptown Martinsville that at the time was that of B.F. and R.P. Gravely\, being used for the manufacture of pins and brackets\, etc.\, for telegraph and telephone companies. Gravely Furniture Company made household furniture until the early 1960’s when they started manufacturing grandfather clocks. The Martinsville Speedway has been giving a Ridgeway Clock grandfather clock as its race prize since 1964. In 1985\, the Gravely Furniture Company was sold to Pulaski Furniture Corporation. In November 2004\, Pulaski sold Ridgeway Clock to Howard Miller Clock Company in Zeeland\, Michigan. Howard Miller announced they would shut down in 2025.

SUMMARY:Artwork Entry: Expressions 2026
DESCRIPTION:Artists living within a 100-mile radius of Martinsville\, Virginia\, are invited to enter work in “Expressions 2026: America250” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.\, Saturday\, June 13\, at Piedmont Arts. All entries must be made during the designated time frame. No early or late entries will be accepted. \n“Expressions” is an open-entry exhibition presented annually by Piedmont Arts and Lynwood Artists. In honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, artists are asked to submit work focusing on the theme “America250.” \nThe exhibition will offer an innovative and meaningful artistic experience for both artists and the community by transforming the milestone of America’s 250th anniversary into a platform for contemporary creative expression. The exhibition invites artists to explore the concept of revolution in both historical and modern contexts — encouraging new interpretations of freedom\, identity\, progress\, and the evolving American experience. \nAll submitted works in compliance with the entry rules are accepted into the exhibition. Up to two pieces of art may be submitted per artist. Artwork submitted for entry must have been completed within the last two years. Work previously exhibited in “Expressions” is not eligible. Artists should review the entry form with the complete entry rules before submitting work. \nFor more information\, visit PiedmontArts.org.

SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon Lecture: "A Few Lines to Margaret: A Local Account of the First World War"
DESCRIPTION:Experience the emotional depth of America’s involvement in World War One through a series of 45 letters from a local soldier to his wife. Come join Hunter Haskins\, a member of the MHC Historical Society\, as he brings the story of the Paschals back to life. \nHunter Haskins is the Assistant Director of the Salem Museum & Historical Society in Salem\, just west of Roanoke.
