DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and uncover the hidden tales of Martinsville-Henry County’s most notable residents with the MHC Historical Society’s Ghost Walk! This family-friendly and informative (but not scary) stroll is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on both Friday\, Oct. 9\, and Saturday\, Oct. 10\, with tours conducted every 15 minutes.\n \nEmbark on a journey through historic West Main Street\, Moss Street North\, West Church Street and Bridge Street North\, where guided groups will encounter “ghosts” who’ll share the rich history of the community. Tours will begin and conclude at the Historic Martinsville-Henry County Heritage Museum\, guided by knowledgeable Historical Society members.\n \nSpace is limited; reserve your spot for at www.mhchistoricalsociety.org. The tour is family-friendly and informative. The brave (or foolhardy) may choose to top off the tour with the optional Haunted Courthouse.\n \nAdmission is free\, and donations are requested\, to help the Historical Society continue its mission of sharing the fascinating story of Martinsville and Henry County’s past and preserving our rich historical resources.

SUMMARY:Desmond Kendrick: “Leatherwood & the Gravelys"
DESCRIPTION:At one time Leatherwood was the hotspot of economic activity in Henry County. The Gravely family ran a tremendous tobacco empire in the area where now we have Larry McNeely’s Leatherwood Grocery and\, across Chatham Road\, Lois Bowling’s art\, furniture and upholstery shop (that brick building was once the tobacco warehouse). Desmond Kendrick grew up just down the road\, hearing stories of the old days from Gravely descendants and their neighbors. His storytelling brings you back in time to the way it once was\, and his unique historical pictures answer questions of what used to be where. \nAdmission is free.

DESCRIPTION:Something creepy is awakening at the Virginia Museum of Natural History this October! \nOn Thursday\, October 29\, the museum is offering its first-ever\, adults-only\, Halloween-themed\, behind-the-scenes experience for those who dare! \nThe evening begins innocently enough\, with an offering of heavy hors d’oeuvres\, adult beverages\, and a signature cocktail during the “Dispirited Hour”. It’s when the restricted access doors swing open and the behind-the-scenes tours begin that things grow peculiar. \nLed by the museum’s curators\, guests will tour the museum with a focus on the “spirit room” collections and the creepy stories many of its specimens tell. As you wind your way through the museum’s restricted areas\, guests will ultimately arrive at a normally inaccessible zone where executive director and renowned forensic entomologist Dr. Joe Keiper will haunt you with a never-before told story of insects and their role in death scene investigations. We hope you enjoy your stay\, because what you learn may torment you to the end of your days! \nKnow Before You Go: \n\nAll guests must be 21 or older.\nTickets must be purchased in advance to attend. Tickets will not be sold at the door.\nTicket sales will end October 22 or sooner\, if all tickets are sold.\nFor one part of the experience\, one flight of stairs is required for access\, but all will be treated to all food offerings\, beverages\, specimens\, and stories.
