SUMMARY:Sounds on the Square: Rosebud Band
DESCRIPTION:Savor the last of the season with Sounds on the Square’s final concert of the year – summer going out with a bang with Rosebud Band. The free concert will be from 7-10 p.m. Saturday\, September 19. Food and drinks will be available for purchase\, and admission to the MHC Heritage Museum will be half price. \nThe Floyd-based band draws inspiration from long-form improvisation. Rosebud stretches each tune into a living\, breathing experience. Members are Ryan Thaw on bass\, William Hairston on guitar\, Colin Cospel on guitar\, Blaine Kaiser on drums and Will Tillery on keyboards. \nTables and chairs will be set up for those who want to sit on the courtyard; or bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on the lawn. Socializing begins at 6 p.m.\, and the music begin at 7.

SUMMARY:VA 250 Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join in the celebration of the semiquincentennial anniversary of Virginia and our nation as notable speakers share stories of the start of our democracy 250 years ago. The program begins inside the restored Henry County Courtroom at 3 p.m.\, as a special installment of the MHC Historical Society’s Sunday Afternoon Lecture.\nBill Guerrant will speak on “Securing Independence\, Not Just Declaring It.”\n \nThomas Sobol\, Supervisory Ranger of Guilford Courthouse National Military Park\, will speak on “The Soldiers of Guilford Courthouse Examined through their Pension Applications.” In the 1800s\, Congress passed a series of bills to provide pensions to Revolutionary War veterans and their survivors. Sobol will highlight the park’s research findings after the transcription of 2\,000 pension applications. He will also discuss the service records of select veterans of the battle of Guilford Courthouse. Greene’s army included escaped prisoners of war from Savannah and Charleston\, former soldiers of the Crown Forces\, free African American Continentals and militiamen\, militiamen with prior Continental Army service\, and the battle-tested First Maryland Regiment with survivors of the Battle of Brooklyn still in the ranks\, to name just some examples of the variety of backgrounds within the army.\n \nThis program is coordinated by Jarred Marlowe\, the local VA 250 Celebration Committee chair. Marlowe is a graduate of Virginia Military Institute\, a member of the Col. George Waller Chapter Sons of the American Revolution\, a consultant for the Blue & Gray Education Society\, and a past member of the board of the MHC Historical Society. He writes the “Community Chronicles” column for the Henry County Enterprise and\, with Andy Doss\, runs the YouTube video channel “Doss-Marlowe: History in Sight.”\n \nLearn More About VA 250

SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon Lecture: "William Byrd: Laying Down the Line"
DESCRIPTION:Join Garrett Channell\, Executive Director of the Salem Museum\, with a look at the life of William Byrd (1674-1744)\, a planter\, surveyor\, and member of the Royal Governor’s Council. The native Virginian got his education and then practiced law in England\, then returned to his American homeland to make his impact. In the 1720s he served as the London agent of the House of Burgesses. He helped establish the boundary between Virginia and North Carolina\, a task which placed him in modern day Martinsville and Henry County. His diaries and manuscripts live on today in textbooks of American literature\, showing both at once the values of British colonial gentry and the emerging American identity.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate “Sharing the Spirit of America” on Wednesday\, July 8\, 2026\, at the Historic Henry County Courthouse\, 1 East Main Street\, Uptown Martinsville! Sponsored by the Colonel George Waller Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution\, the event will begin at 5:30 P.M.\, with the reading of the Declaration of Independence at 6:00 P.M.\, and the Independence Walk at 6:30 P.M.\n \nThe nationwide project commemorates the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8\, 1776\, by Colonel John Nixon at the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia. Our country’s founding document will be read at the same time across 9\,500 miles of the United States and its territories and ten different time zones.\n \nThe 1-mile Independence Walk will begin and end at the Historic Henry County Courthouse. Coordinated and led by All Vets\, a local nonprofit organization\, the walk will honor the fallen\, including those from the American Revolution\, and strengthen the living while promoting physical fitness and wellness in our community.\n \nAll attendees are encouraged to wear red\, white\, and blue and other patriotic clothing and accessories to the free event.\n \n\nVisit this event page daily!
