SUMMARY:Sunday Afternoon Lecture: “The Right Place\, The Right Time - The Story of Ridgeway Clocks\, division of Gravely Furniture Co.\, Inc.”
DESCRIPTION:There is no grander statement for the home\, nor more coveted prize at a NASCAR race\, than a Ridgeway Grandfather Clock. Will Gravely will talk about his family’s unique space in the furniture industry during his program at 3 p.m. Sunday\, May 17\, at the MHC Heritage Museum. \nThe history of Ridgeway Clocks started exactly 100 years ago when Mr. R.P. Gravely and other local businessmen subscribed to $100\,000 in stock to start a company to make furniture in the building in uptown Martinsville that at the time was that of B.F. and R.P. Gravely\, being used for the manufacture of pins and brackets\, etc.\, for telegraph and telephone companies. Gravely Furniture Company made household furniture until the early 1960’s when they started manufacturing grandfather clocks. The Martinsville Speedway has been giving a Ridgeway Clock grandfather clock as its race prize since 1964. In 1985\, the Gravely Furniture Company was sold to Pulaski Furniture Corporation. In November 2004\, Pulaski sold Ridgeway Clock to Howard Miller Clock Company in Zeeland\, Michigan. Howard Miller announced they would shut down in 2025.

SUMMARY:Sex\, Liquor\, and Lawlessness in Early Roanoke
DESCRIPTION:A Wild West Town in Virginia’s Blue Ridge… During the 1880’s\, the new city of Roanoke attracted a large and diverse workforce and a multitude of merchants and investors. But like the western cow towns and mining camps of the same period\, the city also attracted prostitutes\, professional gamblers\, charlatans\, and common thieves. By the early 1900s\, Roanoke had become well known for its brothels\, saloons\, gambling halls\, and rampant lawlessness. Despite a campaign to clean up the city\, it was unable to shake its unsavory image. This was particularly true after Virginia went dry in 1916. With easy access to the moonshine whiskey that had long been produced in the surrounding mountains\, bootleg kingpins boldly transported illegal liquor into the city and used violence to protect their operations. Author Phillip Gibbs explores Roanoke’s early criminal underworld and how civic leaders and law enforcement struggled to free the city from its wild\, wicked\, and unrepentant reputation. Phillip Gibbs\, author of “Murder and Mountain Justice in the Moonshine Capital of the World”\, will be returning to the Bassett Historical Center on May 12\, 2026\, to talk about his new book\, “Sex\, Liquor\, and Lawlessness in Early Roanoke”. This program\, which is free and open to the public\, will begin at 10:30am and will be held in the Susan L. Adkins Memorial Meeting Room. Books will be available for purchase from the author. ***This is a change from the original date submitted for April.
