Relax, Unwind, Sunshine
The Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail stretches for 11 miles, connecting people and places across Martinsville–Henry County.
Once a railroad corridor, it’s now a well-loved path for walkers, runners, and cyclists—linking neighborhoods, parks, schools, and local businesses.
It’s more than a trail; it’s a symbol of how outdoor spaces can bring a community together.
Investing in Connection
In 2022, Henry County was honored to join the inaugural cohort of the US Department of Transportation’s Thriving Communities Program (TCP). This initiative brought expert planning, technical support, and capacity-building resources to help communities like ours launch transformative infrastructure projects—projects designed to boost mobility, reduce pollution, and expand affordable transportation options. The goal? To connect our neighborhoods with the opportunities and resources that help us all thrive.
As part of a two-year collaboration, Henry County received a $90,000 subgrant to advance our vision for connectivity and active transportation. Guided by our technical partner, Main Street America, the Henry County Working Group chose to invest these funds in two key ways: developing an Active Transportation Plan (ATP, also known as a Bike/Ped Plan) and launching a creative communications campaign, affectionately called the Campaign to Build Trail Love (C2BTL).
Your next adventure is only a step away.
The Heart of Our Trail System
The ATP, developed by expert consultants as part of our Comprehensive Plan update, laid the groundwork for a more walkable, bikeable, and accessible community. Meanwhile, the C2BTL brought together communication specialists from the County, the Harvest Foundation, and the local Economic Development Corporation to spread the word and spark excitement about our local trails.
Starting in 2024, the C2BTL Subcommittee rolled out two vibrant campaigns—one in Fall 2024 and another in Spring 2025. Their mission: to capture the authentic voices of our citizens as they shared what the regional and local trail system means to them. These heartfelt video testimonials showcase the deep connection our community feels to the outdoors.
To ensure this momentum continues, the group established a new, lasting identity for the initiative: Paths & Paddles – Move Freely, Live Fully. This campaign celebrates our trails and waterways, building community pride and inspiring future outdoor recreation opportunities throughout Henry County and the City of Martinsville.
