Dr. Elliot Engel returns to Piedmont Arts next month

October 21, 2024

Piedmont Arts is thrilled to host Dr. Elliot Engel’s return to Martinsville Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. Using his signature blend of scholarship and humor, Dr. Engel’s lecture “Da Vinci: Before the Code,” will provide audiences a chance to learn all about the visionary genius of Leonardo da Vinci. The event will begin with a catered dinner at 6 p.m. in the Frith performance hall and the lecture will begin in the galleries at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for the dinner and lecture or just the lecture by calling the museum or at PiedmontArts.org.

Many scholars consider Leonardo da Vinci to be the greatest artistic genius in the history of Western Civilization. Dr. Engel will probe the breadth and depth of da Vinci’s extraordinary mind while revealing the fascinating causes for his many unfinished masterpieces. He even tackles the universal mystery of Mona Lisa’s smile.

Dr. Engel has taught at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. He has written 10 books published in England, Japan, Turkey, and the United States. His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens ran on PBS television stations around the country. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines including Newsweek. Hehas lectured throughout the United States and on all the continents, including Antarctica. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in England for his academic work and service in promoting Charles Dickens in 2009. He lives in Raleigh, N.C.

This evening was made possible by King’s Grant, the event’s sponsor. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets for dinner and the lecture are $45 and tickets for just the lecture are $20. Purchase online at PiedmontArts.org or by calling the museum.
