June is National Great Outdoors Month, so get out and explore nature in Martinsville-Henry County! We offer fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, and many other ways to get in touch with nature throughout the month. Check out the list below with area amenities and ideas for ways to get outdoors!

1. Get out there!
What do you like the most about nature? Is it the relaxation it offers, the plants, animals or do you find yourself wanting the pure adventure and excitement it offers through various forms of recreation? Well, Martinsville-Henry County is just the place to experience all of these things.

2. Cast a line
Take a daycation by yourself or with the family and go throw your line out and reel in the big one. Martinsville-Henry County offers plenty of great fishing locations such as Philpott Lake, Smith River, and Beaver Creek Reservoir.

3. Kick back and float away
Enjoy a float down the beautiful Smith River as it winds through the county! Bring your own tube, kayak, or canoe, as there are many access points along the river. 

4. See the stars (in more ways than one)
Have you ever wanted to enjoy a movie night under the stars? Jack Dalton Park offers “Movie At The Park” throughout summer. So, bring your chairs and blankets and get ready for a great night of fun.

5. Live the lake life
You don’t have to drive far at all to get that sand on your feet and warm summer breeze in your face feeling in Martinsville-Henry County. Philpott Lake offers a variety of parks with outdoor activities. Fairy Stone State Park offers a nice large beach area with an in water playground for the kids and a diving board with a water slide for the older kids and adults. Other parks such as Goose Point and Bowen's Creek boast beaches, swimming, camping, boating, and more!

6. Take a hike
Martinsville-Henry County boasts miles and miles of great trails along the Smith River Trail System. There are trail types for all people to enjoy, regardless of hiking experience. Plus, you can participate in the Dirty Dozen Challenge presented by VisitMartinsville & Virginia Backpacking! 

7. Sample the sweetness
Spend a peaceful Sunday morning on the Smith River while floating or kayaking then enjoy wine by the glass at Hamlet Vineyards.

8. Get your wheels spinning
Get your bike out and ride the many great venues that Martinsville-Henry County offers to cyclists. There is the Bike Barn for those that need to rent a bike for free. If you have a bike and it just needs some repairs done, check out Chain of Fools in uptown Martinsville. You can also join a ride with the Henry County Bike Club.

9. Cookout
Everyone loves a good cookout with close friends and family! Head to one of our beautiful local parks and make use of shelters, playgrounds, and more. Fire up the grill and get everyone outside for a good time of cultivating friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime. 

10. Discover the legend of the Fairy Stone
Learn about the Fairy Stone at an informative ranger program, offered at Fairy Stone State Park. Then, spend the day exploring geology and searching for the small, cross shaped stones.
