Your Guide to Water Adventures in MHC

May 15, 2026

Summer is knocking, and there’s no better place to cool off than Martinsville-Henry County. Whether you prefer casting a line at sunrise, paddling on peaceful waters, or spending the afternoon cruising across the lake, Martinsville-Henry County offers countless ways to enjoy life on the water this season.

Float the Scenic Smith River
Forty-five miles of serenity await on the Smith River. Flowing from the base of Philpott Dam to the Virginia-North Carolina border, this scenic waterway winds through the historic industrial towns of Bassett, Stanleytown, and Fieldale while offering endless opportunities for wildlife viewing and outdoor adventure along the way.

The Smith River Blueway features 10 public access points throughout Martinsville-Henry County, making it easy to plan your perfect float, paddle, or fishing trip. Most sections of the river feature gentle Class I-II rapids ideal for beginners and leisurely paddles, while the waters upstream offer more exciting Class III rapids for experienced paddlers. Whether you’re seeking peaceful relaxation or an adrenaline rush, the Smith River delivers.

Along the journey, paddlers can spot wildlife, enjoy shaded riverbanks, and experience the quiet beauty that has made the Smith River one of the region’s favorite outdoor escapes.

Enjoy Premier Trout Fishing
Anglers from across the region travel to the Smith River for some of the best trout fishing in Virginia. Fly fishers especially enjoy the cool tailwaters below Philpott Lake, where native brown trout remain active year-round. In addition to naturally occurring brown trout, portions of the river are stocked with rainbow trout through the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ put-and-take program.

As the river changes character downstream, so do the fishing opportunities. Warmer waters create ideal conditions for smallmouth bass and redbreast sunfish, giving anglers of every style a reason to cast a line here. Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisher or simply looking for a peaceful morning on the water, the Smith River offers an unforgettable fishing experience.

Spend the Day at Philpott Lake
With nearly 3,000 acres of sparkling water and 25 miles of undeveloped shoreline, Philpott Lake is a paradise for boating, fishing, swimming, and lakeside relaxation. Protected from residential development, the lake maintains its peaceful natural beauty while still offering plenty of amenities including boat launches, campgrounds, picnic shelters, beaches, hiking trails, and a stunning scenic overlook at the visitor center in Bassett.

Fishing enthusiasts will find no shortage of action on the lake. Black bass — including largemouth and smallmouth bass — are among the most popular catches, while Philpott has also earned a reputation as one of Virginia’s premier destinations for walleye fishing.

Whether you’re planning a full weekend camping trip or simply looking for a scenic afternoon getaway, Philpott Lake is the perfect backdrop for summer memories.

Kayaking at Beaver Creek Reservoir

Escape to Beaver Creek Reservoir

Tucked away just outside the heart of Martinsville, the Beaver Creek Reservoir feels like a hidden retreat where the noise of everyday life fades into the sounds of birdsong and gently rippling water. Surrounded by wooded shoreline and peaceful scenery, this 175-acre reservoir offers the perfect setting for a relaxing day outdoors.

Beaver Creek Reservoir is a favorite spot for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Visitors can rent canoes and personal flotation devices (PFDs) on-site, making it easy to enjoy the lake even if you don’t have your own gear. Those with their own kayaks, canoes, or small watercraft are also welcome to launch and explore.

The calm waters make Beaver Creek especially inviting for beginners, families, or anyone simply hoping to unplug and recharge. Spend the morning casting a line, drift along the shoreline beneath the trees, or pause to take in the peaceful atmosphere that makes this hidden gem feel worlds away — even though it’s only minutes from Uptown Martinsville.

Safe Boating & Water Recreation
There’s nothing better than a day spent on the water, especially when everyone returns safely to shore. As National Safe Boating Week begins May 16, it serves as a timely reminder to make water safety part of every adventure on the Smith River, Philpott Lake, and Beaver Creek Reservoir.

Before heading out, make sure everyone in your group has a properly fitted PFD (personal flotation device), and remember that conditions on the water can change quickly. Whether you’re paddling, fishing, tubing, or boating, a few simple precautions can help ensure a fun and memorable day outdoors.

Remember These Water Safety Tips:

  • Always wear a life jacket while on the water
  • Check weather and water conditions before your trip
  • Never paddle or boat alone, if possible
  • Bring drinking water, sunscreen, and a dry bag for essentials
  • Let someone know your float plan and expected return time
  • Avoid alcohol while operating boats or watercraft
  • Respect river currents and dam release warnings
