Virginia’s future Mayo River State Park is a stunning 634-acre destination in southwestern Henry County, located along the Virginia-North Carolina border. This park will serve as a natural and historical gem, complementing North Carolina’s Mayo River State Park just across the state line.
The park’s land lies between the North and South Mayo Rivers, which converge south of the border in North Carolina. The North Mayo River (7.1 miles) and South Mayo River (6.9 miles) have both earned designation as Virginia Scenic Rivers, showcasing their exceptional natural beauty.
Beyond its scenic appeal, the area is rich in history, featuring Native American village sites dating back to 1000-1450. Surveyor William Byrd, who camped near the North Mayo River in 1728, marveled at the region’s beauty and named the river after William Mayo, a fellow surveyor in his party.
The park currently offers 3.7 miles of natural path trails for hiking and biking.
A master plan for the park is currently under development. To learn more about the park’s future and provide input, visit mayoriverspmasterplanva.com.
