Smith River Fest Returns August 23 with Outdoor Fun for All Ages

Mark your calendars—Smith River Fest is back and better than ever on Saturday, August 23 at the Monogram Foods Smith River Sports Complex festival grounds! This annual event is a favorite tradition for locals and visitors alike, celebrating all things outdoors that make Martinsville-Henry County a true destination for recreation lovers.

Surrounded by the scenic Smith River, Philpott Lake, and extensive blueway trails, Martinsville-Henry County offers countless ways to enjoy nature—and Smith River Fest is the perfect place to explore them all in one fun-filled day. Admission and parking are free, making it an accessible outing for the whole family.

Outdoor Adventures & Activities

Guests will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of free, hands-on activities throughout the day:

  • Paddling Demo Pool presented by Brightspeed – Try kayaking in a beginner-friendly pool setting.
  • Casting Pool presented by Martinsville Speedway – Learn trout fishing techniques with expert instruction.
  • Kids Cycle Station presented by Center for Pediatric Therapies – Youth ages 12 and under can navigate a fun biking obstacle course while learning about bike safety.
  • Mobile Bike Barn presented by the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA – Borrow a bike and take a ride around the festival grounds.
  • Kids Zone presented by The Boys & Girls Club of the Blue Ridge – Enjoy bounce houses and petting zoo animals.
  • Hammock Village presented by R&J Tire Service – Take a break and relax in the shade.
  • River Tubing presented by Auto Rehab – Enjoy a refreshing float down the beautiful Smith River.
  • Fly Tying Demos presented by Smith River Trout Unlimited – Watch experienced anglers demonstrate their craft.
  • Yoga by the River – Start the day with a peaceful yoga session at 10:00 AM. (Bring your own mat!)
  • Water Gun Battle Station presented by Henry County Parks & Recreation – Cool off with some splashy fun.

Special Events & Races

Two crowd-favorite events will return this year:

  • The Helgramite Hustle 5K Mud Run – A muddy, obstacle-filled course perfect for adventure seekers.
  • Smith River Boat Race – Open to kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs). Whether you’re racing or just enjoying the ride, it’s a fun way to explore the river.

Free river shuttles will run all day to help paddlers reach access points at Marrowbone Creek, Mitchell Bridge, South Martinsville, and Frith Road. Life jackets are required for all river participants.

Live Entertainment & More

The day will also feature:

  • Live Music presented by Press Glass – Enjoy performances from DJ WHAT! and The League of Ordinary Gentlemen.
  • Magic Show – Delight in a fun-filled performance from magician Joseph Young.
  • Beer Garden presented by Martinsville-Henry County YMCA – Sample local brews while enjoying the festival atmosphere.
  • Vendors & Food Trucks – Browse local goods, outdoor gear, and grab a bite to eat from a variety of food trucks.

Founded in 2008, Smith River Fest was created to showcase and promote the incredible recreational opportunities along the Smith River and across the Martinsville-Henry County region.

This annual event is made possible through a strong partnership between Henry County Parks & Recreation, the Martinsville-Henry County EDC’s Tourism Division, Smith River Sports Complex, Dan River Basin Association, and the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA.
