"In Search of Earth’s Secrets: A Pop-Up Science Encounter” Celebration

Join us at the Virginia Museum of Natural History on Saturday, February 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the public debut and celebration of the new traveling exhibit “In Search of Earth’s Secrets: A Pop-Up Science Encounter”! Special games, activities, presenters and a children's book author will be on hand to celebrate the unveiling!

The mysteries of Earth's sub-seafloor will be featured in a new, interactive, traveling exhibit set to make a one-day-only, public debut at the Virginia Museum of Natural History on Saturday, February 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “In Search of Earth’s Secrets: A Pop-Up Science Encounter”, will feature an immersive theatre presentation inside a 45-foot long replica of the JOIDES Resolution research vessel, in tandem with six, interactive, hands-on learning stations situated around a 30-foot long floor map. The exhibit is designed to heighten public awareness of the latest scientific understanding of the Earth through drilling, coring and monitoring the sub-seafloor.

"In Search of Earth's Secrets: A Pop-Up Science Encounter" is a special project to bring the JOIDES Resolution (The JR) and its exciting science to communities around the country. In Search of Earth’s Secrets is a 5-year project designed to create exciting “pop-up” science events in the style of pop-up restaurants, stores and art fairs. Bringing high quality earth and ocean science content to rural communities and those with a high percentage of traditionally underserved populations will create a buzz about the intriguing discoveries done around the world’s oceans and create opportunities for further learning. The project involves working with libraries, Girl Scouts and other youth organizations, program scientists, educators, and museums across the country.
