A Visit to Skip's

Skip's BurgerThis past week, in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, the staff at VisitMartinsville launched a contest to determine who serves the best cheeseburger in Martinsville-Henry County, Virginia. Numerous well-known recommendations were given by our fans but one underdog slowly rose to the top: Skip's. Not knowing much about this particular restaurant, we had to give it a try!

Skip's is a family owned business, located on Starling Avenue in Martinsville. The location is convenient to Martinsville SpeedwayPiedmont Arts and the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

Owners Skip and Pearl Moore have been running the restaurant that they opened for the past 22 years. The business began in Bassett and moved the new Martinsville location four years ago.

Open Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, Skip's offers a variety of delicious options from breakfast plates and biscuits to burgers, salads and plate lunches. The doors open at 6:30 a.m. and breakfast is served all day!

During my visit I found a seat in the busy dining room for lunch and was quickly greeted by a server who took my drink order. Within minutes Skip was out on the floor making his rounds to greet each patron dining.

Skip MooreDespite the full house of customers, lunch was served quickly by the friendly staff.  I ordered Skip's "Old Fashion" Cheeseburger for $3.59. You can have it served anyway that you want so I loaded it up with lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mustard and mayo. I also ordered a side of potato wedges for $2.19. The burger was great! it was tender, juicy and made with fresh hamburger meat. The potato wedges were fried to perfection and were just the right portion size.

In between serving up orders, Skip continued working the floor to ensure all his patrons were happy and taken care of.

While the food is delicious, I could quickly see that it's the people that make this mom and pop restaurant a must stop destination for hungry travelers. Before leaving I was informed by friendly regulars that I should to come back on a Tuesday to try the meatloaf. Sounds like a plan!

You can tell by his smile that Skip Moore loves what he's doing and your taste buds will agree when you stop by to enjoy a meal.

Visit Skip's on Starling Avenue to check it out for yourself and be sure to tell Skip that you read about him on VisitMartinsville.com!
