The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) and Old North State Lacrosse Foundation (ONS) are proud to announce that the Cardinal Cup Lacrosse Classic will once again be visiting Martinsville this weekend, November 7-8. The Cardinal Cup will feature 21 teams with players from 12 to 18 years old participating.
"This is the beginning of a very busy stretch of sports tourism events at SRSC," said Billy Russo, director of operations at the Smith River Sports Complex.
Games are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. each day on all five main complex fields. On Saturday during pool play, games are slated to begin each hour with the final games beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday will be filled with championship and consolation-game action. The Under-15 kids will face off for the title match at 1 p.m., while the U-13 and high school age groups will determine their champions at 3 p.m.
"The relationship the SRSC has had with the Cardinal Cup organizers over the last four plus years has been an outstanding partnership that has been a big part in growing the sport of lacrosse at the SRSC while impacting the local economy," Russo said.
The partnership between SRSC and ONS began in 2012 and is now in its fourth year with the complex hosting two events for ONS each year. The Fall Classic being held this weekend will bring visitors to the Martinsville-Henry County area from Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The ONS Lacrosse Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization based out of Greensboro, North Carolina as described by its website. The foundation is organized to "provide support for the development of, and to enhance playing, coaching and officiating opportunities in the sport of lacrosse," while its mission is to "provide a lacrosse experience in which the player will have an opportunity to grow his/her skills and knowledge of the great game of lacrosse in a fun-filled environment."
