Event explores lyrics as a soundtrack to the black American experience

The pinnacle of Patrick Henry Community College’s Black History Month events this year will be on Tuesday, February 25. For the final event, the college is hosting a special presentation by local producer, author, and spoken word artist Natalie Hodge. Using poetry, song lyrics, and pictures, Hodge will highlight the trials and triumphs of black people throughout history.

From gospel to hip hop, Hodge intends to use lyrics from a range of genres to explore the rich cultural experience of black people in America. Gleaning from the past and the present, these lyrics could be described as the soundtrack to the black experience.

“I am excited to share the complex history and traditions connected to the black experience utilizing the words of several profound musical artists,” says Hodge. “By isolating their incredible song lyrics, we will be able to embark upon a deep and liberating exploration of a highly diverse people.”

Hodge has also invited PHCC students and employees to highlight their own stories by sending her songs lyrics that resonate with them. She will use both her own curated collection of lyrics and the submitted songs to craft a unique and personal listening experience.
The event is free and open to the public. Hodge will hold four intimate thirty-minute sessions on Tuesday, February 25 in PHCC’s Walker Fine Arts Theater. The session scheduled is as follows:

- 10:15AM – 10:45AM
- 11:00AM – 11:30AM
- 11:45AM –12:15PM
- 12:15PM – 1:00PM
