Eventful Weekend at SRSC

The Smith River Sports Complex (SRSC) will host several events this weekend, September 20th - September 22nd. The weekend events starts off Friday with the Carlisle Classic Field Hockey Tournament. On Saturday the Piedmont Youth Soccer League (PYSL) will have recreation play, the Carlisle Classic will continue, PYSL will have the Piedmont Youth Academy (PYA) Festival along with some travel games and Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) has its men's and women's soccer teams competing. The weekend will end with the first ever Youth Passport Challenge and more PYSL travel soccer games.

The Carlisle Classic Field Hockey Tournament will see teams from Va. Beach, Suffolk, Richmond, Chatham, and Roanoke this weekend.

"The competition is very good, not only having the teams and their families coming to play in our tournament, they are coming to Martinsville and that is very good for our area," said Meade Seiy, Head Coach of the Carlisle Field Hockey team.

The Carlisle Classic will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday with Chatham Hall vs. Trinity Episcopal and North Cross vs. Bishop-Sullivan. Later on that evening at 7 p.m. Nansemond-Suffolk will take on Carlisle and North Cross will compete against Trinity Episcopal. On Saturday Trinity Episcopal will play Carlisle at 9:00 a.m. and Chatham Hall will play Bishop-Sullivan. The tournament ends at noon with Bishop-Sullivan vs. Carlisle and Chatham Hall vs. Nanesmond- Suffolk.

This weekend is also the fourth annual Piedmont Youth Academy Festival. The Festival will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the last games beginning at 6 p.m.

"This event has been a great way for our academy teams to get a travel like event in their back yard and experience some great outside competition. The success of this event has been great and each year we constantly get all the teams returning to Smith River," said Edna Crehan, Director of Soccer for PYSL. "We are so happy to be able to bring these events to Martinsville and it's great to have a place like Smith River to host them."

According to Crehan all of the events that PYSL hosts is just another example of the growth of the soccer club and the growth of soccer in this area.

Along with the PYA Festival, PYSL will also have its Recreation League playing from 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and two travel games starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday. PYSL's travel soccer teams will have 5 games the following day starting at 1 p.m. with the last game starting at 4 p.m.

Patrick Henry Community College Men's and Women's soccer teams will both take on Wake Tech Community College at 2:30 p.m. with admission being $5.00 on Saturday.

The eventful weekend will end on Sunday with the Youth Passport Challenge. This is a free family festival aimed at kids ages 8 to 18 and will be held 2-4 p.m. Attendees will go through a scavenger hunt-like course with games, sports, arts and crafts, free snacks, a DJ, and a chance to win prizes - including a bicycle as the grand prize.
