History

Blind, blood-sucking, squeaky creatures that get tangled in your hair???

Join us as we dispel popular misconceptions and bring the mystery surrounding bats out of the dark during the opening day celebration of the special exhibit "Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats" on Saturday, February 10 from 10am to 4pm at the Virginia Museum of Natural History!
In addition to access to the exhibit...and all other museum exhibits... opening day features a wide variety of special offerings, including bat-themed crafts and activities for children, face painting, balloon art, special presentations by bat experts (11am and 2pm), and a bat specimen station featuring items from the museum's scientific collections! Visitors can also grab a bite to eat at the Buckin’ Good Eats & Lemonade food truck!

ABOUT THE SPECIAL EXHIBIT
How would you like to learn about bats? How about trying on a pair of bat ears allowing you to experience the sensitivity of bat hearing? Or, if food is more of your thing, try to match the bats up with their favorite meals. Feeling adventurous? Try looking for bats masked in a variety of habitats! While you're at it, discover bats' incredible use of echo-location, explore where bats are located worldwide, and learn how mother bats easily find their babies!
Through a wide variety of special effects, multi-sensory interactive displays, a Gothic castle, and environmentally lifelike settings, “Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats” dispels popular misconceptions about bats, describes their ecological importance, and gives visitors an appreciation of the true wonders of the bat world. The exhibit, a touring museum exhibition produced by Evergreen Exhibitions, guides visitors through centuries of mythic representations of bats by different cultures before introducing visitors to the real world of bats as diverse, beneficial mammals with fascinating skills!
