Picnicking Around MHC

One of the fondest memories I have as a kid is going to one of the many beautiful spots MHC has to offer and having a picnic lunch with my parents and siblings. As a kid, your curiosity wants to explore, be in the moment and connect with nature. What better place to do that than right here in lovely Martinsville-Henry County? MHC offers a variety of picnic settings and below are a few to help guide you in the right direction for your next picnic adventure.

You can’t go wrong visiting Philpott Lake, especially in the spring (and early summer). With nature awakening from the dormant sleep of winter, you can get lost in the tranquility of the changing of seasons. Philpott Lake offers numerous spots to lay down the blanket and have a lovely picnic lunch. The Overlook at Philpott Lake has areas specifically dedicated for picnics which offer spectacular and breathtaking views. The facility offers relaxing and peaceful picnic areas equipped with tables and BBQ grills, sun shaded spots for keeping cool, a fun playground for the kids, and walking trails for you and your pets. Philpott Lake also offers ADA accessible areas as well. Get out and explore Philpott Lake’s 3,000 covering acres and 100 miles of shoreline, including its eight campgrounds, six beach areas, and nine boat launches. With all that Philpott Lake has to offer, your heart, soul and tummy will be full on your next picnic expedition.

Another great picnic location with an aquatic view is the Beaver Creek Reservoir. The man-made lake covers 173 acres and has many opportunities for fun in the sun. If you are looking for outdoor recreation in another beautiful setting, Beaver Creek Reservoir is the perfect place to spend the day. Pack up the family, that special someone, bring the boat, fishing rods, the dog(s) and a picnic lunch and you are all set for a day in the great outdoors in MHC. The Reservoir holds 1.3 billion gallons of water that are perfect for fishing and has beautifully pleasing picnic and leisure areas on the shore. Don’t have your own water vessel? Not a problem, the Beaver Creek Reservoir has you covered. Canoes with all the equipment needed can be rented on site to use on the reservoir for a low cost of $10 a day. For a larger family gathering, picnic shelters that offer all the needed amenities for a memorable occasion, can be rented for $30 a day.

MHC is home to 15 parks scattered throughout the city and county, many in comfortable driving distance from each other.
