Professor of Fine Arts at PHCC Showcased

Gerry Bannan, professor of fine arts at Patrick Henry Community College, showcased his work in two national exhibitions over the summer. Through July 18 his work was displayed in Chicago’s ARC Gallery in “The Base Line: An Exhibition on Drawing.”  The ARC Gallery, which opened in 1973, is an internationally renowned exhibition space and an essential art destination in Chicago. The Base Line exhibition which took place there was a celebration of drawing – the most fundamental expression of two-dimensional art.  This exhibition was an excellent venue for Bannan’s most recent exploration in art styles. Although trained as a painter, Bannan has come to prefer pairing of BIC ballpoint on frosted Mylar film to create elaborate and detailed pen drawings. Currently Bannan has his work, “The Way of All Flesh,” showcased in an international exhibition presented at Virginia Tech’s Center for the Arts Miles C. Horton Gallery.  This exhibition called “Beyond Real: Still Life in the 21st Century” will be on display until November 15.  The works in this exhibition display unique and modern approaches to traditional still lifes – contrasting tradition with innovation.  In this exhibition, Bannan again uses the ballpoint-on-Mylar technique as he re-visits still lifes from the European tradition. On Friday, October 2, Bannan will be discussing his work at the Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery.  The venue is free and will begin at 6:30 pm.
