Volunteers Visit Virginia Museum of Natural History

As part of his volunteer service at the Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center, Jacob Salas shares the story of his visit to the Living on the Water Festival at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. If you want to see a work of art at the same time that you are learning about the history of mankind and other mammals, do hands-on activities and make your imaginations come alive with advanced technology, take a trip to the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

When my classmate and I visited the Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH), we learned about the many opportunities offered there. We got to learn important information about our state, and at the same time, learn about the amazing creatures that walked the earth before mankind was even possible. Also at VMNH, you are able to see the process of uncovering fossils by looking through glass windows as soon as you walk in. You can walk through some exhibits and see colorful cartoons depicting mutating microbes to black lights illuminating magnified 3-D images of viruses.

At the time we spent touring the museum, there was a festival going on that contained many fun opportunities and information about jobs that keep Virginia safe and beautiful.

Our favorite exhibit was the brand new "Living on the Water" exhibit with its 3-D models of mammals and a variety of birds. The models told the story of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States, and an area of great natural and environmental importance. It shows the incredible formation of one of the most famous bays to what it has become today.

Each part of the VMNH is amazing and has something for just about anyone that will grab their attention. There was never a dull moment, so take your friends or family and go!
