Four college club baseball teams are coming to Martinsville-Henry County May 3rd-5th to vie for the title of District III, Division II Champion at Hooker Field. Teams that have secured a place in the National Club Baseball Association’s (NCBA) double-elimination tournament are University of Maryland (DII), College of William & Mary, Radford University and Longwood University. The winning team of this tournament will continue on to the NCBA’s Division II World Series in Paducah, Kentucky.

The first game will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday at Hooker Field between The College of William and Mary and Radford University.  A second game will be played at 7 p.m. between University of Maryland and Longwood University.  The public is invited to attend the games and root for their favorite teams. Admission is $5 on Friday and Sunday and $10 on Saturday. Concessions will be available and all proceeds from the tournament will benefit Hooker Field.

This is the second year that the NCBA has chosen Martinsville for their tournament and event organizers were so pleased with the facilities and area hospitality that they signed a two-year contract with the City of Martinsville and the EDC’s Tourism Division for 2013 and 2014.  According to Chris Girardi, District III Conference Coordinator, “Martinsville is definitely one of the finest cities that we have ever had the privilege of working with. On top of meeting all of our needs, Martinsville’s picturesque locations, gracious hospitality, and high quality facilities made re-signing with the city a no brainer. Our teams truly do enjoy traveling to Martinsville to compete because they know that when they come here, they will be taken care of.  I am very excited to see this year’s competition and I think the local baseball fans should be too!”

“The City of Martinsville and the Martinsville Mustangs are excited to host the District III and Mid-Atlantic Regional NCBA tournaments at Hooker Field again,” said Leon Towarnicki, City Manager. “This is a great opportunity to see some well-known teams compete for a shot at the NCBA World Series and I would encourage the many baseball fans in our community to come out to the ballpark to enjoy the games, extend a warm welcome to the visiting fans and players, and help make this tournament a memorable experience.”

Players in each tournament are required to stay at the NCBA’s host hotel, the Quality-Dutch Inn and will be dining at area restaurants while visiting our community. “We are glad to partner with the NCBA and the City of Martinsville to bring this tournament to our area for a second year,” said Jennifer Doss, Director of Tourism for the Martinsville-Henry County EDC’s Tourism & Film Division. “The visiting players, families and fans will bring an added boost to our economy and this is a perfect warm up for the field before the 2013 Martinsville Mustangs season kicks off.”

This three-day tournament is one of two events that the NCBA is bringing to Martinsville-Henry County, another tournament for the Mid-Atlantic Region Division I Teams will be held the following weekend, May 10th-12th.
