Pig Bike Ride to roll on Pig Cookin Day

-Written by Mary Jordan, Spencer-Penn Centre Director

In 2015, Spencer Penn’s Pig Cookin’ Committee wanted to add something new to the wonderful day of Barbeque, Bluegrass and attractions!  So how about a Bike Ride?

Again I go to get information on bike rides from Sharon Shepherd at the Chamber.  Sharon tells me all about the local Bike Club and her experience in planning a ride called Tour de Scholar in August.  The second Saturday in April would be great timing.  She also gives me the name of the president of the Henry County Bike Club, Tommy Smith.  From that moment on, I become Tommy’s stalker!

Tommy became an instant friend and planner for our ride, Pig Bike Ride (why didn’t I name it Tour de Pig? Just shows you what I know about bike rides)   He pulls in other Bike Club members to help.  Linda Drage was very helpful in getting items for our gift bags.  Other members volunteered to follow riders and disperse snacks along the way.

The first Annual Pig Bike Ride was great with 35+ riders on a beautiful day.  The second Bike Ride was hit with that terrible cold, sleety, snow-blown wind.  We still had some riders!!  I think they should have petaled to the local mental health clinic to be checked out but some rode 55 miles that day.  The love of a sport is enough.

Spencer Penn’s Pig Bike Ride provides a choice of three routes for different ability riders.  Departing the Spencer Ruritan Building located beside the Centre at 9:00 A.M., the riders will enjoy the hills and scenery of the beautiful surrounding areas.

Pre-registration is recommended to guarantee a t-shirt.  Registration and check-in is 8-9:00 on Saturday with a gift bag.  On return, enjoy lunch of wonderful home-cooked barbeque straight from the grills of our competitors.

Come to Spencer Penn Centre on April 8 for Barbeque, Bluegrass, Barnival (children’s activities) and Bike Ride!
